Angels, Tigers and RedSox haven't spent any money though.... that is one thing that I can't stand about Yankee haters. They make it out like they are the only teams that spend money. They spend a ton but if you look at the teams in the playoffs it's people like Boston, St Louis, Dodgers, Angels etc that all go out and spend on free agency too. Yanks overpay but they aren't the only ones guilty of spending on free agents.

Save it for someone that believes it. The Yankees are the only team that can afford a $200 million payroll, and it's quite an advantage.

Yeah it sucks to only have 1 WS ring, but no other professional sports team can even say they've won 14 straight division titles.

The Yankees won this year, in large part, for three reasons: C.C. Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and A.J. Burnett.

 

In effect, they replaced Carl Pavano, Jason Giambi, Mike Mussina and Bobby Abreu, the former two of which were albatross contracts for any other team but the Yankees. They were able to replace those guys with new free agents that were still in the prime of their careers, and those guys produced as such.

 

No other team cam afford to do that. Let's not pat the Yankees on the back so hard for doing something no other franchise can do.

Before you act like that is a stupid question, I would like to count the amount of threads that say, "X team refuses to spend money..." I do not mean to the degree of the Yankees, but you and I both know a multitude of teams refuse to spend money. It is a lot bigger of a gamble, but do not pretend teams bring out all the stops in securing top level free agents. When cellar dweller franchises (and their owners) can finish in the positive due to the luxury tax that NY, Boston, Detroit, etc. is willing to pay, why spend the money if they are not fully committed to winning?

Let's also not overlook the fact that teams like the Red Sox and Yankees have realized that you can't just buy the best free agents and win championships. These teams have invested a lot of money in scouting and minor league development in recent years. So, in addition to being able to buy big free agents, they are now producing players in their farm system. That turns into a future starter, or some needed help in a mid-season trade.

 

I view this similar to the Xavier and Trinity argument in KY high school football. Those teams have an advantage with the numbers, but that advantage is magnified because they do things the right way. Same with the Sox and Yanks. They're well run organizations with a lot of money and resources at their disposal.

True and excellent point! The YES network is a HUGE money maker for Yankees and they have advantages because of it. But you and I both know a lot of teams simply refuse to spend money.

I don't really know why everyone is congratulating the Yankees for spending money? I wouldn't be proud if my team had to spend $420 million in the offseason just to get to the playoffs.

I still don't think that money spent will get them to the World Series or if they do win it. If I remember correctly the Red Sox owned him in 2007. I know they have some different players now but still CC was pitching a game to get the Indians to the WS and couldn't do it.
