September 19, 200917 yr I can tell you guys one obvious benefit... their parties have sorority girls... and lots of them.
September 19, 200917 yr For those on the outside looking in can't really ever understand it. I fought the urge to join for 2 years thinking it was "paying for friends." I'm an alum of Sigma Chi at Murray State, and I hung out with those guys before I joined and we were friends and I got to go to the parties, my gf at that time was in a Sorority. Eventually, I just said, why not? Best decision I ever made. I made some life long friendships and if I ever get married, those are the guys that will be in my wedding. I get to go back twice a year and catch up with those guys on Brothers Day and Homecoming and its so much fun to just tell old stories of the crazy things we saw. For those that say, "I made plenty of friends not being in a "frat", how many of those do you still keep up with and talk to regularly or go see twice a year at your old dorm (aside from the friends you had in high school)? Yea I would have still been friends with the Sigs had I never joined. Would I still hang out with them? Probably not because the bond you make going thru pledging and experiencing with all the time you spend with them is something that can't truly be understood by those on the outside looking in. I had fun prior to joining but, but not near as much as after I joined. It was more than just the parties too, you got a huge support system, you learn time management, someone always has your back. I could call anyone of those guys for the most part and they'd be here to help me doing anything. Always Proud to be a Sigma Chi!
September 19, 200917 yr Author Academics, 50% of non greek students graduate, while 70% of greek students do. Leadership, fraternities give you chances to better prepare for a job after graduation. Social activities, activities planned well in advance allowing you to meet a lot of other people. Community service, as each fraternity has a Philanthropy they give to. Athletics, each fraternity member has lots of chances to compete in many different sports. Career networking, chances are that an alumni of your fraternity may be able to help you get a job and in todays job market every advantage helps. Brotherhood, knowing that whatever is happening in your college life you have a group of people supporting you. These were the exact points that sold me...
September 19, 200917 yr These were the exact points that sold me... If ya make it thru pledgeship, you'll never regret it!
September 19, 200917 yr The daughter was a Delta Zeta and both sons are Sigma Phi Epsilon(SigEps) and I'm very proud of my "greek" children. Morehead State Eagles. I was a little sister to the PiKapps.
September 19, 200917 yr IMO, being greek is an all or nothing type of thing. Meaning, some people think it's stupid...and some really enjoy it. I happen to be in the first group, but if it's your thing, more power to you.

I also still hang out with my friends from high school regularly as well.

I graduated with Cum Laude honors and a 3.57 GPA.

In other words, you don't have to be the least bit qualified for a job, as long as you know the right people. Most of the rest of the "benefits" are nothing you can't gain by making the right friends (and not paying for them). When I was at Western, we would walk into any and all fraternity houses on campus and be greeted like Norm when he walked into Cheers.

September 20, 200917 yr I played baseball at NKU, and unless things have changed since I was there the Greek life was nothing special to say the least. All I remeber about the Frats at NKU is that they had these benches with the letters of each fraternity on them and only they could sit on them. Other than that you never seen much of them because NKU is such a commuter school that all the houses were off campus. This was seven years ago so things might have changed since then, but looking back there is no way I would have ever wanted to join. Too much fun partying with the teams that stayed on campus. Softball, Volleyball, and Womens tennis sudenly became my favortite sports once I got to college.
September 20, 200917 yr I liken being in a fraternity to being on an organized sports team. Yeah but being on a sports team didn't cost me a dime. It actually saved me money.
September 20, 200917 yr ^ Friends with the DZ's huh? Heard that one a few times. Dating one for a while now, can't think of any "history" that I've ever had with one other than my current girlfriend.
