September 12, 200917 yr I picked this one up the other night because the blockbuster down here had 50% off all their pre-viewed movies. I like Sean Penn and ever since my Human Sexuality class I have enjoyed learning about the Gay Rights Movement in the late 70's and early 80's. I was wondering what everyone else thought about the movie? Since I wasn't around back then, did it seem like a pretty accurate depiction of the time and the movement? Discuss...
September 12, 200917 yr Penn was phenomenal, he can play absolutely anything he wants and does it to perfection.
September 14, 200917 yr I think it's safe to say that this probably wasn't a very popular movie in KY.
September 14, 200917 yr I think it's safe to say that this probably wasn't a very popular movie in KY. True. But in fairness, with it being an independent film, not a lot of people watched the film because of its limited release. I do not recall it even coming around here.
September 14, 200917 yr All that I needed to see was Sean Penn :puke: was enough to know I wasn't going to waste any money on it or watch it for free for that matter. JMO
September 14, 200917 yr I've watched! It's a great movie! In fact, I bought it the other day @ Blockbuster. I am probably the biggest Sean Penn fan alive. He's one of the few actors that I will purchase movies of, for the simple fact that he's in the movie. As to your questions about the time, I was a youngster during that era, and I don't honestly know much about the social climate of that time. However, knowing history, I would say it would present a fairly accurate view of the times.

September 14, 200917 yr Ugh, Sean Penn. The only movie I liked him in was Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I Am Sam was horrible, IMO. It was like a poor ripoff of Hoffman's character in Rain Man. :idunno:

The only better performance, IMO, was his role in Mystic River, which was phenomenal, and for which he won an Oscar. Penn's ability to be the character he's playing is absolutely uncanny. He is one of only a few who can transition from role to role to role, and his characters transcend him. Most often, the opposite is true of actors, especially those who are prolific.

September 14, 200917 yr Although I haven't seen Milk, I've seen a lot of other Penn movies. I'd say he's one of the 2 or 3 best actors on the planet. Absolutely amazing in Mystic River. Although I suspect that his political leanings are just a bit left of the BGP mainstream. Or most mainstreams, for that matter.
September 14, 200917 yr Just to refresh everyone's memory, Penn won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in Milk.
