Milk (Sean Penn Movie)

Featured Replies

Another side note, it was directed by Louisville born Gus Van Sant who has done some other great movies including Good Will Hunting which was nominated for about 9 Oscars I believe in a very crowded field of great movies.

Although I haven't seen Milk, I've seen a lot of other Penn movies. I'd say he's one of the 2 or 3 best actors on the planet.

Absolutely amazing in Mystic River. Although I suspect that his political leanings are just a bit left of the BGP mainstream. Or most mainstreams, for that matter.

I think Mystic River was his absolute best performance ever. I watch that movie at least once a month.

Although his political leanings may not be in line with many, how can his talent be denied, if no one watches his work?

Only because we are talking about Milk, a movie about gay rights, I will note that Van Sant is homosexual, for anyone who did not know.

I never thought I'd say this....but I could not disagree with you more! :irked: The performance by Penn in that movie was one of his best. The only better performance, IMO, was his role in Mystic River, which was phenomenal, and for which he won an Oscar.

Penn's ability to be the character he's playing is absolutely uncanny. He is one of only a few who can transition from role to role to role, and his characters transcend him. Most often, the opposite is true of actors, especially those who are prolific.

We'll agree to disagree. When I think of an actor having the ability to be the character, Penn is not one that comes to mind. Johnny Depp is one that comes to mind for me, though. But again, this is all just my opinion.
Have you seen Milk?
I won't waste my time, honestly. I'm not a fan of his acting.

Oh, he's definitely a screaming Liberal, but that has zero to do with why I don't like his acting.
Just to refresh everyone's memory, Penn won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in Milk.
An Oscar these days mean about as much as a Pulitzer to me. If you catch my drift.

Then why don't you like his acting, and what have you seen him in? (Besides FRH?)

I Am Sam, Colors, The Falcon and the Snowman, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Dead Man Walking, The Thin Red Line.

If it had to do with politics, I wouldn't like 98% of movies or actors.

I don't know what it is about him, something just bugs me. Plus, I just don't like his characters, as in I Am Sam. I can't really explain it, the guy just isn't my type of actor.

So:

1) You don't like the roles he chooses/stories being told

2) I can understand something about him bugs you...that's Nicholas Cage for me.

3) You haven't seen anything recent, so is it fair to say you can't accurately assess the full body of his work?

I can't handle watching him. Fair or not, that's why I refuse to watch any recent movies with him. I'd likely turn it off or walk out.

Fair enough...Like I said, Nicholas Cage creeps me out. I don't think he can act, and he's just plain creepy. I have tried to watch a couple of movies, because the stories seem great (ie National Treasure). But he's just so darned.....creepy!

Penn was pretty solid in "Casualties of War", also starring Michael J. Fox.

 I get that, I'm not a big fan of him either. Cage is also a very boring actor.

I can't believe you said that.
