The KHSAA will continue to offer a slow-pitch state tournament...for six teams.

Featured Replies

The KHSAA will continue to offer a slow-pitch softball state tournament for the next two seasons, but the only schools eligible to participate will be the ones that also field fast-pitch teams playing a minimum of 10 games.

NKY, by the way, is the only area in the entire Commonwealth that still offers slow-pitch softball.

Only six of the 20 local schools that had slow-pitch teams also staffed fast-pitch squads.

Isn't this a little silly ??

Only 6 teams and yet, when they win the "State" Tourney, they'll have a trophy and title identical to the widely contested fastpitch champs.

I don't mind them playing the game in their own league/conference, but I think it's past time that sport should no longer be KHSAA sanctioned. OTOH, it's a shame the fast-pitch teams of those 6 schools could lose some good players that choose to play the arced-pitch version.

LOL, there are probably more high schools currently with varsity archery or bowling than slow-pitch softball...

This is two-month-old news. This guy just got around to noticing? The Kentucky Post ran a story when the KHSAA made the decision back in May.
I'll try to be more current with my news bulletins in the future!

I agree :thumb:

From all the hits that the KHSAA takes, this must be a money-making ploy of the KHSAA to rake in profits from the state slow-pitch tourney and nothing to do about the kids.

There is a lot of mis-information in this thread.

The state (KHSAA) decided to stop sanctioning slow pitch softball since only 20 schools fielded teams and they were all in one area. Some of those schools, mostly the larger ones like Dixie, Simon Kenton etc. also field fast pitch teams.

In an effort to ease the transition to fast pitch, the decision was made to allow 2 more years of slow pitch as long as those teams also played 10 games of fast pitch in those years which would allow them to "get ready" for a full fast pitch schedule after that. (Sounds good in theory but not practical for schools that have both fast and slow pitch teams).

Now some schools are contemplating just switching to fast pitch only as soon as next year, some are still undecided, some want to play two more seasons of slow pitch while playing 10 fast pitch games, some are trying to push alternatives such as switching slow pitch to the fall season. That one would help with Title IX things but would be tough to pull off with Volleyball and Soccer and Golf and Cross Country already in place.

It sounds like it's not a state tournament, but a Northern Kentucky regional tournament.

Basically it was that at the end although it was open to any team in the state.

It is kind of a long story on how it came to be that way.

With perinial slow pitch power, Newport Catholic, dropping slow pitch & going to fastpitch only, will other schools follow suit?

I see this move as detrimental to the small schools. Schools like Augusta, Covington Latin, Silver Grove, etc. The six schools that already have fast-pitch will not feel the pinch, but for the schools that are equally balanced on guys vs. girls sports this may be trouble. If they are unable to field a fast-pitch team, the sport (softball) may be eliminated.

I would like to know the statistics of the number of softball scholarships that have been awarded to KY softball players, both before the change to fast-pitch and now. Is there that much of a difference??

I am going to see if I can get a Proposal voted for that will kick all fast pitch softball teams out of the KHSAA, since my school has never played it before, this is our first year, and I want to win it dangit.

If they're unable to field a both a fastpitch and slowpitch team for whatever reason (including this one), they should drop the slowpitch program because there's no future in it.

Give it time, with the athletic tradition at that school, they will be one of the top teams in the next 4 or 5 years. Just like Highlands, they have only had a team for about 5 or 6 years & have been in the regional tournament for the last two years.

My ring defentally says State Champ, not Northern Kentucky Region Champ.
