Walk-on talent is a lot more utilized in football than it is football. Look no further than Nebraska's walk-on program.

I'm not sure if Nebraska uses the walk-on program as much as they did when Osborne was there.

I say we give a pass to Rich Rod. I think he knows what he is doing. How many BCS teams wanted Pat White to play QB? One, WVU.

I don't really like Rich Rod, but he can coach and his teams always end up getting better and better. Glenville state won 1 game in his first year, and in '93 they were playing for the NAIA National Title. As an OC at Tulane he helped lead them to an undefeated season. At WVU, who was pathetic when he got there, he led the Mountaineers to only 3 wins in his first season. The next year they were 9-4, and continued to improve.

At Michigan it may take a little longer than two seasons for them to win 9 or 10 games because of the style of athlete Michigan has always recruited and the fact that he is going to have a true frosh running his offense this season. But, WVU is recruiting some spread type players now, and I think eventually he could get Michigan back to prominence and make them a player on the National Level.

The man knows football, especially offensively (how many teams run the zone read now?), and I think that he will do a great job at Michigan if given the chance.

Any coach who does not try to get a great walk-on program is missing the boat IMO. The better the walk-ons you have to practice against the better your team will be. Coaches do not like having their 1's and 2's beating up on each other they like to utilize the walk-ons for such a thing. Not to mention he will probably end up with some good a dedicated graduate assistants out of those walk-ons who are their for their love ok Michigan.

Plus you never know what you are going to get. Some times you could find a diamond in the rough. Most of the times though, like you said, you are looking for nice practice players. What is wrong with that? It's not like Rich Rod is holding open auditions for starting QB from the student body.

Rich Rodriguez is swiftly turning into the Billy Gillispie of football hires. He has taken one of the best programs in the land and made them mediocre. Now, he is taking mediocrity to a whole new level. Check out this article:

Rich Rodriguez looks to tap walk-on talent

I have no love or hate for Rod or Michigan, but I think it is way to early to say he is "taking mediocrity to a whole new level" after one season. He may end up failing, but I just think this is really jumping the gun.

What was Michigan's record last season?

I don't care if it's a new coach, a whole new roster, a new offense, a new playbook and new cheerleaders - there's no excuse for a program like Michigan to be as pathetic as they were last season.
