What was Michigan's record last season?

 

I don't care if it's a new coach, a whole new roster, a new offense, a new playbook and new cheerleaders - there's no excuse for a program like Michigan to be as pathetic as they were last season.

I repect your opinion, however most people do not understand how bare the cupboard was when he took over. I follow Michigan football very closely and still have faith in RR. The walk-on program has not affected his recruiting. When he got the job he did a great job of securing the recruits Coach Carr had already got and even stole a few players like Odoms and Shaw. Last year he recruited a top 5-15 class depending upon which site you use for rankings. This class so far is OK not great but he has the QB that fits his system perfectly in Devin Gardner. While I do not think he recruits as well as Carr he does develop players better than Carr did. We will be fine and in my opinion 2010 and beyond Michigan will be a top 10 team yearly again.

I'm a lifelong Michigan fan, as well. I just hope he is able to transition his coaching style into the Big 10.

Bottom line, with the exception of Ohio State, UM had better players than everyone else in the Big 10 and all the recruiting services would affirm that.

 

I think it is a very similar situation to BCG. Both stubborn guys that refuse to believe anything but what they do will work, regardless of their personnel.

 

I have no doubt RR knows the game of football. Same as I have no doubt BCG knows the game of basketball. But not every coach and their abilities translates in to success, simply because of the history of a program... just ask BCG.

 

Rodriguez may very well turn it around. I hope he does as I have some rooting interest in the Wolverines; but it is naive to believe he has not gotten off by taking two steps back. And unlike WVU, Tulane, Glenville State, etc. UM will not wait until you take two steps forward.

Did anyone see who Michigan had as quarterbacks last year? Its hard to succeed when your qbs cant complete a simple 5 yard pass. If you watched any of their games last year, they had people open down the field, but Threet nor Sheriden could throw anywhere near the recievers. Your offense is not going to very good when you lose your top RB, 2 top WRs, 2 top Qbs, 4 Olineman, and installing a completely new offense. Now the defense was a different story, RR did make a mistake by hiring Scott Schafer. I think RR knew that, and that is why there is no more of Scott Schafer.

Well considering they lost a great senior class the year before and had basically nothing behind it, I think it was to be expected. Carr didn't really stock up the talent his last three seasons in Ann Arbor.

No way. Threet only completed 51% of his passes last season, Sheridan was even worse completing only 46%, you cannot win like that. Minor and McGuffie combined for 1000 yards, but if you only throw for 1700 yards in college football you had better have some very good running backs. The Big 12 is awful, but it isn't so bad that you can win with Sun-belt type talent.

Are the players talented/good because the recruiting services ranked them as such, or are they ranked high because they chose to go to Michigan?

I'm not buying it. They had enough talent to make a bowl game last season.

 

They had enough if Mallett stays, Boren does not transfer and Airington does not enter the draft. Thats three NFL players that left due to the transition. It was bare or the players with talent are young. Besides Brandon Graham and Brandon Minor this senior class is weak. I am not justifying RR last year he failed, the players failed and it was miserable. I am just saying give him time and his track record is very successfull after year one. I expect 6-8 wins this season and after that anything less than 9 a year is troubling.

I actually think he has a great chance to succed in the Big 10 with his style. IF he can recruit the same type of athletes (P. White, S. Slaton, N. Devine) that he did to Morgantown they will run circles around most athletically.

Recruiting services in Football are garbage. It's not like basketball where you have AAU. You have combines and camps and tape.

 

For instance:

2002- had Kyle Wright as the Number 1 prospect at QB, and some scouts pegged him as one of the great QB prospects of all-time. I would be one of the many on here who wouldn't even know who he was had he not have played for my Hurricanes. The #3 player on the Rivals list was Whitney Lewis. Does anyone know what school he played for?

 

Does anyone remember when Early Doucet was a CANT MISS PROSPECT? He was okay in college, but hardly an all-timer. Willie Williams had one of the highest LB grades of all-time coming out of high school.

 

Derrick Williams and Patrick Turner were the top players in the '05 class. They were both good in college but I don't know that they should have been top 10, or 20 or probably 40.

 

Tebow was only ranked 22, Sam Bradford was a 3 Star.

 

As a Canes fan I have starwatched way too much. You look at our teams from the last couple of years by STAR rankings and we have a top 5 or 6 team. Which of these players were deserving of the bluechip ranking they recieved?......Dederick Epps, Orlando Franklin, Javarris James, Kylan Robinson, Kenny Phillips, Dajleon Farr, James Bryant, Lance Leggett (a top 10 guy by Rivals have you ever heard of him?), Tyler McMeans, Tyrone Moss, Willie Cooper? Thoser are all 4 and 5 star guys, just to name a few. For instance last years class at Miami had only 3 guys who weren't 4 or 5 stars.

 

This isn't basketball, where players are scouted when they have equal competition (AAU & such). You really can't do it in football. Sure 40 times look good, but that doesn't tell you what that man does when the game is on the line. You can't really evaluate players as well in HS football because you really don't know how much is the player and how much is the competition. For instance, if you put Riley Cooper from Florida at a school in EKY he would look like a future NFL Pro Bowler.

 

Basically STARS in Football have to do with if the player:

a. Makes plays during games

b. Has the measurables

c. Attends that Recruiting sites events.

d. Who is recruiting them or where they sign.

 

It kind of has to be that way. Football season is too short and the teams are too spread out for every D-1 player to be thoroughly evaluated. Just my .02 cents on the Stars.

 

If you watched Michigan last year, your eyes would tell you that they just didn't have the players.

 

Also you have to remember that the players at Michigan weren't brought in to run a Spread Zone Option offensive scheme. That makes a huge difference.

Excuse or no excuse, it is the truth though Wireman. As an Ohio State hater I like to see Michigan succeed. Give Rich Rod some time, you'll be glad you did. The man can coach and recruit his tail off, the Maize and Blue will be fine.

I haven't jumped ship yet, but I'll be watching a little closer for improvement this season.
