Stock Market

Featured Replies

I have recently started pushing some money into the market and have been doing great.

Some penny stocks I have been messing with are very interesting buys for the future.

BIEL - Expected FDA approval on a drug free pain reliever. (Up 35% today)

Not even worth a penny today.

VRNM - Just got a 23 Mil investment from BP

Company is now defunct.

BRSI - Emergency parachute systems maker that just signed a $17 Million deal with the army and has to add 100 employees to there current 27.

Currently worth 8 cents per share.

Anyone else mess with this stuff from time to time.

Hopefully HT got out of these stocks at a good time. Penny stocks are riskier than high stakes gambling.

Meanwhile, the S&P 500 was up 13.5% on average over the last 10 years. The only negative year in the last 10 was 2018.

My retirement lost 6.5% in 2018. Grew 21% in 2017 & 25.5% in 2019.

I have an Uncle that lost nearly everything playing in penny stocks. He started small, made a ton, then went almost all in. Turns out there was a ton of naked short selling in the company he was invested in, and he lost hundreds of thousands of his retirement, not to mention his house, his car and his wife. Penny stocks are worth pennies for a reason.

I've got some cash laying around that I'm looking into investing. I've always been curious about stocks, but have never gotten past my fear of the stock market as something that is similar to a casino.

So, I'm looking for a couple of beginner question and answers from the experienced investors out there.

1. Is the timing right?

2. How much capital should I start with? I have $5k I'm looking to invest. I think I may ease myself into this incrementally with that $5k. Is that the right move?

3. I'm looking to use an online trading platform (TD Ameritrade, E Trade, ect). Who would you recommend? I'm looking for long term investments, so I wouldn't be actively trading past my initial stock purchase.

Any additional information would be appreciated.

The key question for you is what is your time frame on this money? If you are willing to committ to 5 years or longer, the timing is good. Much of the downside risk has been removed by the market.

Definitely 5 years and beyond.

Market history says you will have big gains. Historically it takes 18-24 months for the market to recover. That would be a 35% or more gain to you investing now.

5 years is the minimum time to be in. Sounds like you will be purchasing a mutual fund and sitting on it for 25-30 years. That’s how you triple your money.

I went back in pretty much full force on Monday right around the time the DOW hit 18,800. My advisor believes that there are still going to be plenty of ups and downs, but we're guessing/praying we're are at the beginning of a directional change.

Now is the time to double up on your investments if you can. Especially if you are in long term.

Yup...

This is so much different than the collapse of 2008.

If you’ve got spare cash, and a while to watch it grow, invest it immediately...

Def a good buying opportunity for first timers. I don’t know if we get back to 30k points anytime soon, it appears a lot of that was a bubble. Still plenty of room to go up from here though.

Agreed.

We were riding a high that was bound to bust.

However, if you’ve got some spare cash, throw it in the market, you’ll see a very nice return in the next 2-3 years.

Unemployment numbers come out tomorrow. I was just looking online. I saw projections as high as 4 million and 10% unemployment. What will numbers like that do to the market?

IMO, it really doesn’t matter at this point as I’m only talking about investing disposable income.

This virus will pass, and when it does, the market should respond quickly.

If you have a rainy day fund that you don’t anticipate needing for the next few years, invest it now...

I agree.
