DragonFire Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I put this in college basketball because #1 comes from this sport, but this is for all of sports. Thoughts? http://www.sportingnews.com/college-basketball/article/2009-07-29/sporting-news-50-greatest-coaches-all-time?page=1
saint4 Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Pretty solid list. I think Rupp is ahead of Coach K and Bilichick as of right now, but both could surpass him eventually.
Mack The Knife Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I have a huge problem with Barry Switzer not being included. Three NCAA titles and a Super Bowl ring. Plus 4 other Top 3 finishes including one that was 10-0-1. Absolutely no way Tom Osborne and Bo Schembechler should be ranked ahead of Switzer.
Log Mountain Boy Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I think just looking at the college bball coaches Wooden is easily #1. But after that with Dean Smith, Adolph Rupp, Bobby Knight, and Coach K, those guys are all very close IMO.
pigman Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Dean Smith does not belong in front of Bobby Knight.
Hatz Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 what about Lou Holtz? What did Lou do? He won one National Title at Notre Dame. One in his career.
Hatz Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I'm not sure if my comment is out of order on this forum or not but since it's the only one discussing the list . . . I saw this during the Mike and Mike show this morning. One thing that stuck out to me was the list of Baseball managers. Sparky Anderson is not listed. Tony Larussa is. Sparky is one of the all time leaders in wins. He won three World Series with two different clubs. Run with the Reds: 2 WS titles, 2 more Pennants, 1 more Division Title and all in 9 years. Run with the Tigers: Terrible team that he builds and they win 1 title and another Division title. I Like Larussa but how is his record any better than Sparky's?
Hatz Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I haven't looked, but is Calipari on it? You jest but in watching Mike and Mike this morning, they were discussing who was up and coming that could one day make this list for College B-ball. Greenie said, "Calipari has certainly put himself in position to make a run at this list." I guess Greenie is one of the 18%! I find it funny that it's now National Talk people who are crowning Cal before he coaches a game in UK blue.
pigman Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I agree with you Hatz on Sparky. It takes a great manager to keep all those egos in check.
Hatz Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I agree with you Hatz on Sparky. It takes a great manager to keep all those egos in check. If Sparky's only legacy was the Reds in the 70's, people could say: "Well who couldn't win with those guys?" But the Tigers run as the manager of that team solidifies his place in the top ranks of baseball leadership. He took a long time loser and made them into contenders and world champs until they could no longer afford to keep the great players they developed. Who knows how much more Sparky would have won in Cincy with an extra break vs. the A's in '72 or Kuhn not voiding the deal in '78 for Vida Blue to join Seaver on the staff? For that matter if Howsam had just utitlized a little bit of initiative in the Free Agent drafts of '77 and '78 to acquire some players rather than "pass" in each round?
Hatz Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 My apologies. I overlooked that Sparky is at 38. He was not listed this morning on the Mike and Mike show on their baseball list but he is on it. Sorry. :notworthy: :isurrender: If there is one omission worth noting too: How about Red Holzman of the NY Knicks? Popovich is listed. So is Pete Newell for College B-Ball. But Holzman won 2 NBA titles and fielded a great "TEAM" in the late 60's and early 70's that played greater than the sum of their parts upsetting the Lakers in two NBA finals while making 3 Title series.
