Saying that GWB and Palin are liked because of their intellectual limitations (which, IMO, are exaggerated, but this is besides the point) is like saying that President Barack Obama was liked because of his inexperience, or that VP Biden is liked because of his gaffes.

 

These candidates are chose in spite of their shortcomings, not because of them.

I don't know about you, but the idea of a long-haired, bigoted, beer-drinking, NASCAR-loving, porn-viewing, tattooed, quick-tempered, Bible-tossing, reality-TV-watching, American Idol-addicted, coke-sniffing, pill-popping, overweight, underpaid, debt-ridden clown who cheats on his/her significant other regularly while rocking out to AC/DC in the Oval Office is just flat-out frightening. I use those pejorative terms because they cast an umbrella that covers about 95 percent of the US population (if not more).

I think the selection of Palin as McCain's running mate was for many of the reasons you stated, to select one who lives like us ... working influential female, pregnant teenage daughter, ... etc. However, the last election showed us that strategy failed miserably. Many saw through that. We may not be as mouth breathing a population as you think.

I think it is simply people want leaders who understand the struggles they are going through and have similar values instead of not understanding the daily struggles that people are going through cause they have never been there.

 

That makes sense to a point. George W. has never been in the struggles that most working Americans have. He might have carried himself that way but most of us were not born into the resources he was born into.

 

The ultimate example of that would be the Kennedys.

I think it has less to do with what you say and more to do with our country's alarming instinct toward anti-intellectualism.

I think more politicians would much sooner throw on a pair of blue jeans, pretend their first beverage choice is Budweiser (assuming they partook in such immoral and ludicrous activities as consuming alcohol in public) and sit and watch the race than they would try to pass off Harvard as a community college or claim to be as shallow as most voters.

 

As for Sarah Palin, I don't believe her ignorance is celebrated as much as it is flatly ignored by her supporters. She was merely the victim of the elite liberal media, right?

I can't tell you how many times I heard people say (either personally or in televised interviews) they were voting for GWB because he reminded them of one of their drinking buddies.

That to me sounds stupid. The fact is with me for example its easier to support and like someone (Bush and Palin) that come off as having good morals. Obviously George Bush made a lot of mistakes as president and IMO Sarah Palin is not someone I think should be president. But IMO a lot of people like them for their beliefs, particularly in a state like Ky in the bible belt.

Just because Bush played lip-service to the Christian Right doesn't mean he's morally upstanding, especially given how ethically challenged he was.

How about the tax cheats Timmy and Charlie? How about the gaffe maker Joe and the guy who has no experience in anything, but organizing people to protest.

 

I find your description of the American people to be the true liberal elitist belief that the majority of Americans are stupid. While many are ignorant of politics, most are average, hard working Americans. I resent the way you degrade my grandfather who bought a farm in 1932 and eventually owed 300 plus acres and owed a bulldozing company. Or my father who sold farm equipment and was an excellent mechanic and welder. Or my son who is in the military, my daughter who works for a doctor. Or my many friends who are bankers, doctors, construction workers, nurses, ministers and a host of other professions. If tried to stop being an elitist maybe you could see what is out there.

What makes their morals stand out?

 

Maybe it is that they have not done the kind of things that Bill Clinton, Barney Frank, Charles Rangel, Sanford of SC and Geithner are known for.

Maybe they are not ashamed of being Americans and do not have to go around the world apologizing to everyone hoping someone will like them.
