Ya your right but I think looking at the records they changed the sub-districts up every two years but I am not a 100% on that, if so one knows please post it for me.

I hated sub-districts. It made the state extremely unbalanced and was unfair to some teams.

 

I don't remember the district championship games being the last week of the regular season though.

The first time sub-districts were used was in 1979-80. A new alignment came out in 1981-82. A third alignment was used from 1983-86. And in 1987 the KHSAA went to a standard alignment (like today) and the winner and runner-up from every district went to the playoffs. In 1991, the state adopted a policy of four teams per district making the playoffs.

I believe in 1985 CovCath finished 9 - 1 and didn't make the playoffs.

 

A 6 - 4 Lloyd beat the Colonels head to head. Both teams finished 2 - 1 in the subdistrict and Lloyd went to the playoffs on the strentgh of the head to head win over CovCath.

 

Was that the Eugene Luke era for LLoyd?

I remember those well. For awhile Somerset, Corbin, Middlesboro and Wayne County were in a sub-district. In 1983 all 3 teams were in the top 10 in AA and only 1 team could make the playoffs. Somerset beat Corbin 7-6 at Somerset and went on to the state title game. In 1982 Somerset, I believe was in the side with Boyle County because the Rebels upset Somerset 28-27 and kept the Jumpers from making the playoffs. It was Somerset's only loss of the season and either the following week or 2 weeks later they travelled to Corbin and put a pretty good beating on the Redhound team that would go on to take the State Championship. I hated those sub-districts--it kept some really good Corbin, Middlesboro and Somerset teams out of the playoffs. I liked it much better when they started allowing the District winner and runner-up to make the playoffs starting in my senior season of 1987. In 1988 and 89 Corbin beat Somerset during the regular season but the Jumpers rebounded to beat the Redhounds in the playoffs in some classic matchups.

I remember the sub-districts well.

 

Boyle did not play in a sub-district until 1983. That year the old District was chopped up with Boyle, Russell County, Casey in one side and Somerset, Wayne County and someone else (Garrard?).

 

1983: Russell County won their side with an undefeated season and Somerset theirs. The Jumpers beat the Lakers and went to the state finals.

 

1984: Boyle took their half and the Jumpers their half. Somerset overcame a 10-7 deficit going into the 4th quarter and poured it on behind Massey and Fletcher for a 38-10 win.

 

1985: I think Somerset won the whole district again.

 

1986: Russell County upset Ed Rall's last Boyle team but lost again I think to the Jumpers.

 

 

Danville went into Sub-District in 1981 I believe. I recall Jessamine, Estill, and that may have been it. If memory serves here was how they fared:

 

1981: Won their half but lost in the District Title game to Woodford (?)

 

1982: Again won their half but lost in the title game to Franklin County.

 

1983: Won the whole district by beating Cawood and David Hensley. Lost a heartbreaker to eventual state champ Conner (21-3).

 

1984: Won the whole thing, district and State and went 13-0. :dancingpa

 

1985: Beat Cawood again (?) but lost in the Regional to Newport in a very sloppy NKY mess.

 

1986: Won the District and Regional (Highlands) but lost a heartbreaker to Belfry in the Semi-Finals.

 

 

Maybe someone else can fill in the blanks.

 

As I recall, no one was given a title unless they won the District playoff game.

I thought 1986 was the last year for sub-districts.

 

It's been a long time, but to fill in the rest of NKY AAA sub-district history, I'm pretty sure 84-86 looked like this:

 

84 CovCath beats Newport, but is ousted by Danville. Colonels entered post-season ranked No. 1 in class AAA, according to the AP poll.

 

85 Newport beats Lloyd, but fails to make the state finals. Newport was really good, I can't remember who beat them. Maybe Belfry?

 

86 Highlands beats Lloyd, but is beaten by Danville.

 

Three year run of no state titles in AAA for NKY. Seldom happened in the old four class system. CovCath took care of that the following year though.

For a few years in the late 1970s and early 1980s (1979-86), the KHSAA adopted some sub-districts in football. Instead of a six-team district, it was divided into two sub-districts of perhaps three teams each. I don't know why it was done; perhaps for travel reduction or allowed teams to play more rivals. But not every district was divided.

 

When playoff time came, the two sub-district winners would meet in the first round. My question is for some of you who might have been around back then: was the winner of that game considered the district champion or did both teams get trophies for winning the sub-district?

I recall the sub-districts, senior season 1980 - Newport against Conner - Conner won 21 - 16. Newport had a great season - was undefeated during the season. The 1980 season was one of Newport's best teams. A lot of hard nosed players on the team - Simpson, Slaughter, both Ewing brothers, Salter, Stephens, Henley, Pope, Switzer, Baldwin, Chambers, Schnelle, Kilburn, Smith, and so many more - sorry if I may not have mentioned anyone but this team was good. The amazing thing was that the entire sub-district was awesome - Highlands was loaded along with NewCath. In fact, NewCath had so much talent that season - but the injuries got the best of them.

The district champ was the winner of the game between the two sub- champs.

 

Yes that is how it was. We all couldn't get by Bardstown and if we did we had to play Fort Knox. Tough!

Wow, those names bring back a lot of memories. Simpson was the man among boys in the sub-district, which was what pushed the Cats over the top. Conner was pretty much bad news back in those days, but I still remember being shocked that they beat Newport.

Prestonsburg had a good run '80-'85,

 

1980 lost to Pikeville class AA for the sub district title P-burg went 8-3 with a 11 game schedule.

 

1981 P-burg with a 11 game schedule went 10-3 beat Johns Creek '27-8' in the Quarterfinals then went on to lose to Somerset '10-0' in the semi-finals.

 

1982 P-burg with a 11 game schedule went 10-3 beat Whitesburg '26-6' in the Quarterfinals then go on to lose to Corbin '28-0' in the Semi-finals.

 

1983 P-burg with a 10 game schedule went 10-2 beat MC Napier '20-0' in maybe a sub-district battle then go on to lose to Somerset '17-0' in the Quarterfinals.

 

1984 P-burg with a 10 game schedule went 9-2 losing in the first round to Hazard '19-14' in a big big upset.

 

1985 P-burg with a 11 game schedule went 12-2 beating Hazard '47-7' then went on to beat Corbin '27-7' in the Quarterfinals after that went on to lose to Newport Cent. Cath. '20-7'

In 1985 either Corbin or Middlesboro won that sub-district. Somerset finished 2-7.

 

Corbin won the district and was number 1 in the state when P-burg beat them in the Quarterfinals.
