If a player runs into a catcher with his shoulder, I have to believe every umpire in the state would eject the player. There really is no interpretation involved in that one. If you are going in head first, you better make sure your body hits the ground well before you get to the catcher. Any contact before your slide starts, even while in the process of trying to slide head first, is going to get you ejected.

 

I stand by my earlier comment. There are probably a dozen possible outcomes going into home plate head first and only one of those outcomes is good. The other 11 or so are all bad and most involve an injury to the player sliding in head first. It just isn't a smart play, especially with the collision rule. Keep your eye on the catcher, avoid contact and slide feet first.

I agree, much better chance of a few transfers to Scott County being ruled eligible for Basketball.

Congratulations to the Thorobreds. An apparent umpire mis-call led to the disqualification of Harrison County 2B Matthew Dye in the bottom of the 5th inning. On what should have been an inning ending double play there was no signal so Dye continued running and when he approached home plate the Beechwood catcher was so far up the baseline that when Dye dove for the plate, the umpire ruled that he was trying to run over the catcher and thus disqualified him from the game. According to WCYN's Jim Swinford Dye was treated rudely by the catcher and I am not sure if the Beechwood Catcher was also disqualified (Since have heard that he threw a punch at Dye and was not ejected from the game). This means that Dye will have to sit out the opening round game of the State Tournament. If anyone has a videotape of the play it would be nice to see it, to see if there is some sort of an appeal to be made for the young man. He is an excellent ball player and a super person and it is a shame that a poor call or a no call by the men in blue will cost him a chance to play in the opening round at Applebee's Park. Congratulations to Seniors Eric Case and Bobby Feeback for coming up with run scoring hits in the 2nd inning and for Junior Matthew Dye getting a run scoring hit in the 5th. Sophomore Logan Dailey went the distance to get the win for the Thorobreds. I just spoke to some of the people at the game and apparently the Beechwood catcher threw a punch and was not ejected from the game. Apparently Channel 27 and 36 have video of the play so maybe there can be an appeal and the young man can play in the opening round of the State Tournament. You would thnk that throwing a punch at an opposing player would be an automatic ejection wouldn't you? Was the umpire behind the plate a 9th Region umpire?

 

I was at the game and sat directly behind home plate. I do not have a child that plays for either team but do have one in the ninth region. The play in question was a total result from an umpire not making a call at second base. It doesn't matter what call he makes,just make one. However, by not making a call he confuses the rest of the players both running bases and the feilders. The runner who was not called out at second keeps running and during all the confusion (because once again no call was made at second base) the runner is sent home, the ball was high and the runner did not slide but kind of lowered his sholder getting to the plate. This was not a malicious act at all and I think he was just trying to find somewhere to go to reach the plate. I did not see any punches thrown by the beechwood player and could be wrong on this, i just didnt see it. It's just a shame when fans get so upset and make complete fools of themselves. I understand the intensity at sporting events can be high! But to watch some of this stuff is embarrasing. One fan indicated she had it all on film? Probably so, and that's great, because umpires will make mistakes from time to time. However, I think more could have been learned from filming themselves (Both teams, but not all fans. keep in mind it only takes a few to amke the whole team look bad) and watching themselves on film! Oh..how embarrased they would have been? Or maybe not? My hope is the young man (Dye) is not penalized a game. It will all depend on what the home plate umpire rules. He he just sent out of game and delegated him to the bench he will probably be eligible to play. Best of luck to HC , They have a very nice ball club.

Change made by KHSAA mid-season....ALL ejections come with a two game suspension...players and coaches.

 

I don't think you are correct. What coaches were told in pre-season (or at least the meeting I attended) is that ADULT violators would get multiple game suspensions, not student violators. The online listing seems to indicate that this penalty (more than one game) was directly at adults.

You should always be for your Region! My boy played for Boone and they were knocked out early as well and I too would have liked to seen how they would have done. But they didn't get there either! Good season for Scott this tear also. Nick Hiller plays summer ball on same team as my sone. He's fun to watch.

I wish I had. Even stayed up to watch news on Lexington TV and no one showed the play. Oh well. Just put the original note on there because I had heard who the umpires were and didn't want someone talking about region bias. Had nothing to do with the call. Interference/obstruction at the plate is probably the call that involves the most judgement of any call made in HS baseball.

Harrison County is playing much better ball now than they were then. Harrison has not lost since they lost to Trinity 4-0 and Lex Catholic 13-7 in the Bullitt East Tournament. If they continue to play good ball, they shoould have a chance to avenge both of those losses.

Would have to agree. If CovCath would have made this best of 3 series, not Beechwood, I think the end result would have been a lot different for Harrison. But the better team between Harrison and Beechwood def. won and I wish Harrison the best of luck!

I have seen too many times when it's beneath the umpire to make a call when everyone knows the result anyway. Everyone except the players who are going on instincts while playing the game. Had the ump made a loud call and a brief signal there would be no discussion here. Considering it was a three man crew for this game, he doesn't have the responsibility anyway of hurrying to make a call at first on the dp as there should be an ump "staying home" at first to make the call. Did the plate ump know the kid was out?
