We can go back and forth for days about this call but the fact of the matter is that, as the TOG stated, the play didn't affect the outcome of this game.

 

Beechwood won in a hard fought battle to upset the favorite CCH. Thats it.

I heard it said today that it is a shame Beechwood won because Cov. Cath. had a chance to win state and Beechwood doesn't.

For you that are questioning whether or not Buerger (the 2nd base umpire in the game) knows the direct slide rule, I will tell you that he does. How do I know? Because we talked about that particular call after the game and in his judgement the runner was sliding to the back edge of the bag without malicious intent. I trust his judgement as he has been voted to 12 straight regional final assignments.

 

Oh and for you all who will say "look at the picture, he isn't on a direct line." I ask (like someone else did) how wide is this line. I am 5'9" 140 lbs and if I slide into a bag some part of my body will be outside the "line". To think someone can slide directly to the bag while remaining within a width of the bag is absurd.

 

The crew in this finals game did a fantastic job. :thumb: to Lyle Travis, Ron Arnsberger, Dave Buerger, and Dusty Bryant.

Unbelieveable! That's 3 regional titles in 6 years for a "Class A" school and this one has to be the most impressive of them all.

 

As far as the play at 2nd base...if by rule and/or interpretation that's an illegal play, it shouldn't be.

Where is the judgment here? The rule says "direct line" to the base? Even at full speed/real time it was obvious the runner slid to the right going after the defender. Where is the judgment?

The strike zone rules are declared very clearly yet umpires don't call every strike. It is because there's a bit of judgement in every pitch. I really think you need to let this go Clyde.

I have to say, CovCath must have the biggest roster. There seemed to be everybody dressed. Is there an updated official roster anywhere for the tourney? OldGuy?

Congrats to the Tigers! You pulled off the unbelievable. I wish I could of been there. I would like to see the celebration and the look on some faces. I see some BGP posters are MIA so far. I guess they are still wondering what happened. :lol::lol::lol:

 

I hear there was some negative comments coming from the stands/dugout on the first base side. One would think after a school like CCH has been beaten by BW in basketball and FOOTBALL this year they would of had a little more respect for them, guess not. :puke:

 

Great job Nathan! You have stepped up and been a leader all year. From asking to catch to this. What a memory of your senior year.

 

3 of the 4 all tourney team for BW are under classmen. Great job by the entire team to step up and work hard.

In regards to what you believe you heard from the first base/dugout afterwards, I'm sure they have plenty of respect for Beechwood, and the students may have been caught up in emotion, but the boys on the team were far too concerned with their last game ending that way than to worry about disparaging your team. And before you point fingers you should look into your own student section...heard some not so great things from them last night.

 

Congratulations to Beechwood, and good luck in the state semi-finals. Snyder had a heck of a game and was deserving of the mvp.

 

CovCath boys, ya'll had a great season and nothing to hang your heads about. We're proud of you.

The direct line is determined rather simply. Start with Point A being first base and Point B being 2nd base. Draw a straight line. That's it. Its that freaking simple.

 

I don't buy the "its a judgment call" crap. You can't have an easier judgment call than asking if the runner slid directly into the base on a straight line? You guys are throwing in interps that do not exist.

The best basketball official I know is Tim O'Hara. He makes a mistake every once in a while as well.

 

The "malicious intent" point is irrelevant to the rule.

If anyone knows the Youtsey kid ask him how nervous he was while that last ball was coming towards him. Last year the kid was in middle school and now he's making the last catch as a freshman. Had to be nervous.

Indeed, and I am in agreement. The crew overall was good in all the games. The strike zone got a bit tight and of course there may have been some questionable calls, but it's impossible to get every single call right.
