IMO poor job by the school to have the graduation ceremony on the same time its school is to be represented in post season play. Kids, parents, or whoever shouldn't have to make this decision in the first place. Going to be a lot of conflict of interest this night, and not just for the valedictorian mentioned, but for a lot of people who will A.) either be playing in the game as well, B.) students who want to go watch the game and cheer their team on, and C.) everyone else involved who would like to be at both but has to make a decision.

I agree.

No doubt in my mind, you go to graduation and give the speech. Their are a few moments that really stick out in your mind through your life, and I think your graduation from high school is one of those moments, especially if you get to give a speech. There's no greater honor than speaking in front of your fellow graduates on that night. Send the best to your team, and hope that you can play another day.

I would play the game for sure. I think video taping the speech is a great idea.

I asked the valedictorian of my graduating class who was also an athlete. He said it wasn't even close...he'd play in the game.

 

P.S. The salutatorian said the same thing as well.

I would assume that as the valedictorian this person is going on to college and will have 4, 6, or more years of education left. They may never get a chance to play another organized baseball game in their life, let alone a chance to play for a regional or maybe even a state title. Play the game…

It all depends on the individual, but at least by giving their speech by video they are still giving the speech to their classmates.

 

And I don’t think a video tape would work the other way around.

It may not be that easy. For one a team/school doesn't know if or when they will play in a tourney game late in the year, they don't know what the draw will be like and what day they will play, then you have rain delays/cancellations that will push the games back a day or more.

As a senior sponsor and a parent of a senior, this would be very hard. I'm glad the school that I work for is in Ohio, they do graduation on Sunday afternoon.

I really like the idea of the video that would be an awsome way to handle that. You really can't change the date of graduation - that is board set so that would bring up a whole new group of problems.

I agree with cheering on the team and everything but you would still have parents raising all kinds of stuff.

What a fight this would cause. Dad and son or daughter says game, mom says graduation.
