Why stop with sodas? Let’s tax Twinkies, ding-dongs, potato chips, anything with fat, sugar, or bad carbs. The new regime can call it the fat-tax, kind of like the luxury tax and the sin tax. :madman::irked:

 

Maybe the Democrats can just legalize marijuana and then tax the heck out of it to support our new socialized health care system.

I don't have a problem with taxing junk food. Keep the healthy food tax-free. It's a necessity. But until I see some evidence that junk food improves your health, it's not a necessity. I have no problem with taxes on luxuries.

This is the part I disagree with. If they're taxing sodas, it should be all sodas. There are no "healthy" sodas. I don't care if the artificial sweetners are apparently less fattening and healthier for you (I disagree but that's another thread). I also think that beyond the sugar, sodas are just toxic.

Where does it stop? Who defines what is “necessary” and what is not? Florida and Chicago have/are proposing taxes on bottled water. Isn’t water a necessity?

For those of you in the mindset of "this or that tax doesn't bother me because that habit/behaviour/food/etc is unhealthy", I respectfully submit the following for taxation:

 

1. Jaywalking-it's dangerous and ill-advised. The Feds should beef up IRS personnel to walk the streets of our major cities and issue tax due notices on the spot to all violaters.

2. Mountain climbers-same as 1.

3. Swimmers (you could drown)-same as 1, except instead of IRS agents in cities, we'll need a new aquatic IRS sub-department.

4. Snow skiing (this includes myself as a frequent violator)-mobilize an IRS Mountain Task Force to enforce tax against skiiers.

5. Crying babies - Crying babies get on people's nerves, thereby leading to high blood pressure. Plus, you're never too young to pay taxes, right?

6. All women regardless of social status etc. - Women are the #1 reason men have shorter life expectancies. Shorter lives mean shorter careers that generate income that in turn generate tax revenues to the Treasury. Tax women to make up for shortfall due to mens' deaths.

7. Aborted babies-Every aborted fetus that could have had a job one day results in lost revenue to the Treasury. Tax all women having abortions to make up for this lost revenue.

8. People driving in left hand lane on highway-same as 5, increase of blood pressure for other motorists, which leads to health problems. Will need a new Highway Division of the IRS to levy tax on violators.

9. Lawyers-no further explanation necessary. (Sorry Hearsay,LN, A7:cool:)

10. People responsible for "He Went to Jared" commercial-Everyone hates these commercials. Hatred is an unhealthy emotion which leads to numerous possible health problems; therefore, the Jared excise tax is necessary.

11. Collectors of vinyl records-Vinyl records contain petroleum based materials which increase our dependence on foreign oil. Tax all vinyl collectors in order to become energy independent.

12. Eaters of biscuits-Let's face it, biscuits are bad news. Bad for you (especially with a greasy sausage patty on it). Tax all biscuit eaters now.

13. People who engage in unprotected sex outside of marriage-This behaviour obviously leads to potential health problems. Though it might be tough to enforce, the IRS could develop a new division responsible for the observation of all sex acts that take place outside of marriage and issue tax due notices upon completion of the act. Since many people smoke after sex, the IRS could theoretically kill 2 birds with 1 stone by taxing the sex and the smoking at the same time.

Very true, but It already cost way more at the grocery if you buy healthier foods. So telling people to eat healthier but having higher prices on it doesn't seem right. :irked:

I keep telling myself that too and I have a very liberal definition of the word "moderation".

Man, there is some scary stuff in this thread to the libertarian in me. People making decisions for me as to what is a necessity, what is toxic to me, what I should be consuming and using taxes to control and regulate behavior. The fact that there are several people thinking that way is pretty frightening.

But remember during the campaign those of us that brought up likely Obama increases in taxes were just fear mongers.

Rush brought up very this idea way before the election. And more of the same to come.. But what does Rush now?:sssh::sssh:
