Beer and pop tax on tap for health care

Obama and the Dems will tax us to death.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Joe Six-Pack may have to hand over nearly $2 more for a case of beer to help provide health insurance for all.

Details of the proposed beer tax are described in a Senate Finance Committee document distributed to lawmakers before a closed-door meeting Wednesday. Senators are focusing on how to pay for expanding health insurance for an estimated 50 million uninsured Americans, a cost that could range to some $1.5 trillion over 10 years.

You can’t raise that from beer money alone.

Lawmakers are looking at an extensive list of spending cuts and tax increases, including a new levy on the value of job-based health insurance. The latter proposal seems to be gaining ground. It could lead to higher income taxes for some people with particularly generous job-based health care.

Dims now deciding what you can drink.

Are all you Obamamites happy?

Remember his promise not to raise taxes?

Can you say liar?

Then he'll smarmally sit back and say the legislature did it, not him. He's still voting present.

Won't affect me really. I don't drink a lot of alcohol and I only drink diet sodas.

Diet drinks, however, wouldn’t be taxed.

:D

This is the part I disagree with. If they're taxing sodas, it should be all sodas. There are no "healthy" sodas. I don't care if the artificial sweetners are apparently less fattening and healthier for you (I disagree but that's another thread). I also think that beyond the sugar, sodas are just toxic.

The choice of what to drink is still ours, just have to pay for it. I don't see any difference between this and cigarette taxes.

Agreed. It's a "use tax".

But if the goal of the Democratic Party is to supposedly make life better for poorer Americans, then why create more taxes that will affect them just as much as everyone else? This is where use taxes make me uncomfortable. It's a very egalitarian tax in that it affects everyone the same; that is also the source of what makes it problematic. The article is correct in that beer drinkers currently enjoy a smaller tax than wine drinkers. I would bet that if you look at the numbers, a lot more of the working poor in this country drink beer.

Here's where I become unsympathatic...and not because I haven't been there. Sodas are expensive even without taxation. I get my rant on when sodas are allowed to be purchased with food stamps (same applies to junkfood and candy), and when people claim this will be a hardship for the poorer Americans. If you can't afford sodas, don't drink them. They are NOT a necessity.

Not picking on you, but this kind of attitude is why we are continually burdened with more and more taxes.

I have no problem with this just like I didn't have a problem with the cigarette tax. I've been trying for years to get my wife to quit. It took this tax to get her to quit smoking.

I'm guessing you didn't realize I was kidding.

I don't claim that diet sodas are 'healthy'. But they are most definitely better than a regular soda.

And if drinking a diet soda is the worst habit I have, I'm fine with it .

Cigarettes, tobacco, alcohol are far worse than having a "toxic" diet soda once in a while.

Oops, my bad.

It happens. It's hard to sense things through words sometimes.

Actually alcohol probably isn't in moderation.
