Here's how I look at it: I've never EVER had a say in whether or not I get taxed, or how much that tax will be. However, I do have the ability to choose which products/services I will buy, and pay taxes on. So, given that, if I want to smoke, I will pay exorbitant taxes. If I want to drink sodas, I will pay taxes. It is what it is, and frankly, I have better things to expend my angst upon than whether or not sodas get taxed. I'll leave all that fear and strife to those of you with enough clout/money to be worried. If the government is coming to take all my money, well, more power to them....it ain't much to begin with. :lol: What happens if everyone stops buying these products? Maybe the administration will move on to tax something that will affect you.

Are you worried that tobacco products will stop being bought? Or liquor? Or wine? Or beer? Or.... There are taxes on just about everything. Seriously...if you want your soda, pony up the change and go for it. Stop trying to lead me down the fear-trail. Just buy the danged soda. It always cracks me up when the extreme hypotheticals are thrown out there. OMG! They're going to tax soda! What's next? We won't have any soda! What will happen then?! OMG! What will we do?! If I stay in a hotel I pay an increased sales tax, a local occupancy tax (amount depends upon municipality), a state occupancy tax. I have to pay taxes on a crappy '97 Honda. My life is regulated and taxed, and does it really matter? No. I just adapt and keep going. Seriously...if I want a soda, I'll pay the tax, and drink my soda. I'm sure there will be more to come. But, at least I can control if I pay this tax or not. If my income taxes are increased, I have no say.

With the utmost of respect, it is this "resigned acceptance" of government behavior as your fate that makes me think that we as Americans have become like bleating sheep, forever just milling along with the crowd with no control over our lives. 235 years ago or so, government behavior like this resulted in an outraged citizenry dumping products into Boston Harbor. Those people have stones, we have none. Just because you can "cope" and "move on" does not make the behavior acceptable. The outrage expreseed by those on this board is righteous and justified.

The only thing about it that I think should be changed is that ALL sodas, not just diet ones, should be taxed-if sodas of any sort are to be taxed.

No one has taken away your choice to enjoy junk food. You can still buy it. Have at it! I don't mind. You do not understand what I am saying. CCH5432 said it best with his quote that "taxation is not to be used as a form of punishment or control". My statement is that some are willing to contol what food is being put into one's mouth, a control that the government should stay out of, but they are willing to allow an innocent to die. They need to get their priorities in order.

The citizens of both countries were scared and were looking for someone who could (promise) bring about change in their lives to make everything better. Because of fear and difficulties of life the people of these two countries turned to these individuals, of great speaking skills, who promised change to make their lives better. These promises sounded great, but the average person knew little beyond the words they heard. Many who supported either of these two really did not know what they were voting for.

I have choices in those taxes. I am more bothered by income taxes, but that's another issue. The ONLY thing that bothers me in this particular case is that I feel if sodas are to be taxed, that there should be no disctintion between diet and non-diet sodas being taxed. Sodas are (as I mentioned before) chock full of unhealthy stuff, and if the reason to tax one and not the other is that diet has artificial sweetener, they've missed the boat.
