Close Vacation Spots...???

Featured Replies

Depends on how much or how little you want to do. One of the most relaxing vacations we ever took was to a place called Canaan Valley, West Virginia. A ski resort; we stayed at the lodge, I played golf, my wife took a couple of nature tours, we took several little side trips. Think the Smokies in terms of scenery, but without all of the go-carts and putt-putt golf. But that was years ago, so I don't know what it's like now.

Ten hours from NKY offers a bunch of options, that's for sure.

Thanks for all the ideas guys, very much appreciated.

We took the kids to a resort in the N. Georgia Mtns called Big Canoe. Lakes with fishing, and boating, real nice swimming pool and clubhouse, great golf course. Close to Dawsonville, where they were in the process of building a NASCAR museum. Place to pan for gold, and close to the beginning of the Appalachian Trail. Awesome vacation!

The Port Clinton/Sandusky area of northern Ohio makes for a great family vacation. Sandusky has Cedar Point, a much better amusement park than Kings Island IMO. East Harbor State Park along the shores of Lake Erie has some very nice family friendly beaches that are awesome. Marble Head Light House is something to visit. Doesn't cost anything, but it's one of those things that will stick with your kids. It's not everyday you can walk right up to a real working light house. There are several dairies in the area that give tours of their ice-cream making facilities ( I recommend Toft's). Sandusky has a lot of shopping and eating that would remind you of a sea shore town rather than a town in the midwest. There are some great seafood places in Sandusky and Port Clinton. You can also take a ferry out to Kelly's Island and Put-In-Bay. On either of these islands you can rent bikes and do a lot of sight seeing around the islands. And Lake Erie has some of the best walleye fishing you will ever find. There are numerous charter services that would be happy to take your money.

This is a wonderful place to visit! Put-In Bay is a great time!

*Savannah is one of the nicest cities I have ever been in. The riverwalk is great. Tybee Island is just about 30-45 min. away from Savannah and is a great spot for a family vacation. Lots of good restraunts in the area. Could recomend some if you need.

Gettysburg Pennsylavia is one of the most beautiful places I can think of. And with so much history there...it is a must see.

Chicago is a pretty cool city - especially this time of year.

Sports lovers can take in a Cubs or White Sox game. Animal lovers should visit the aquarium that overlooks Lake Michigan. Go to the top of the Sears tower and look at the skyline. Excellent museums and cultural places. Take your wife to an Opra show. Take a boat ride down the river and learn about all the Chicago architecture. Take your daughter or wife to the American Girl store. Etc.

I have to agree here. If you're looking for a vacation that isn't the beach look into Chicago. There's all kinds of stuff to do. Or New York. Or DC.

NY is great.

NY is great.

Yes it is.

Tubbycat, if you go to NY or Chicago park your car!!! Do the public transport thing. You will cost yourself a fortune parking in those cities. You'll miss the $8 parking at the State Tournament that's for sure!:thumb: Actually, driving in them is just as bad. Either city would be good. More famous stuff in NY, I think you can have just as much fun if not more in Chi-town though. Last time I was there, And-1 was in town and I caught a Cubs/Mets. It was pretty cool.

Charleston and Savannah are two of my favorite cities, although I don't think you can get there driving from N. Ky in the 6-10 hour range unless you are really pushing it and are lucky enough to avoid getting multiple tickets.

I have been to D.C. and my wife has been to NY City and she did not like it. We plan on taking a trip to D.C. when our kids get a bit older and can appreciate the history and significance of the D.C area. Also, been to the Gulf Shores area.

If we had to choose today, we would go to Chicago. I plan on checking out the Outer Banks as well! I have always heard the Wilmington area was beautiful!
