May 5, 200917 yr The problems started right when Votto fielded the ball. He had to wait for Janish to get closer to the bag to make the throw. The throw form Janish wasn't great, but Votto would have at least blocked it if he were covering. 2 mistakes by Janish. 1. He wasn't timely covering second base. 2. Once he got there and recieved the throw, the runner was in his grill, resulting in a poor throw, to a pitcher. Just hold on to the ball, and you're still playing.

He got off of the bag pretty good, but again you're right it might have been better to just hold on. The throw did beat the runner easily though. When I first saw the replay I thought the runner that broke it up was pretty far away from the bag. I haven't seen it since though so I could be way off.

Very illegal slide....
May 5, 200917 yr Very illegal slide.... Agreed. I still would have liked to have seen Janish stick that one in his pocket though.

May 5, 200917 yr At least no starters were called on in relief. Apparently, Owings was next in line. Which is why Dusty used Hanigan to pinch hit in the last inning rather than Owings.

May 5, 200917 yr Hmm. Wonder if they would have brought Homer up for Owings next start? I would doubt it. They probably would have gone with Masset IMO.
May 5, 200917 yr Agreed. I still would have liked to have seen Janish stick that one in his pocket though. It's hard to do though. The throw clearly beat the runner and he wasn't expecting to get hit as far off the base as he was.

Was he moving over to try and back up the throw to first? Obviously with a runner on third the catcher had to stay at home.
May 5, 200917 yr Very illegal slide.... Just saw the replay. No question. I'm pretty sure the MLB rule says you have to be able to reach the base when you slide to the side. No chance Hanley R was going to be able to reach the base.

I think he was shaded pretty far towards second and when Votto hesitated I think he actually broke towards second, but I'm going off of memory of a replay at midnight.
