Fish win

Gonzo headed back to Cincy with oblique injury. Votto draws a 1 out walk.

 

It was only a matter of time. He was starting to get it going with the bat too.

I'm glad I didn't stay up to see how this one finished. The Reds had several opportunities to win this one, but never could come up with the clutch hit they needed. It sounds as if A Gonzo may be out for a while, and that CC will get his wish, and that we will get to see what Janish can do. He did have 2 hits after coming into the game last night. He was charged with a throwing error that ended the game last night, but looking at the reply on the reds.com site it looks like D. Herrera may have had trouble finding the bag that led to him not being able to catch Janish's throw. Maybe somebody that stayed up, and watched the game can offer a better point of view. I hope that Dusty gives Janish a chance to see what he can do, and not try to play Hairston at SS, but knowing Dusty he will probably play Hairston Jr. the majority of the time.

The problems started right when Votto fielded the ball. He had to wait for Janish to get closer to the bag to make the throw. The throw form Janish wasn't great, but Votto would have at least blocked it if he were covering.

They got to find a way to score. These are the games they have to win.

I really liked the outcome. The Marlins got into BIG trouble several times and got out of it. It was a messy win, but a win nonetheless.

 

I don't think the throwing error was entirely Janish's fault. The pitcher didn't exactly give an A+ performance covering the bag.

I hate to see Gonzo get hurt, especially since he was starting to hit the ball hard. But if you didn't see this one coming, you need to start paying attention.

Your wish, if I'm not mistaken, was to see Janish get some more chances at SS. He should get those opportunities now. You saw a pulled oblique muscle coming? :lol: Seriously, everybody knows Gonzo's history, and I don't think too many were counting on him to play more than 990-100 games. It will be interesting to see who the Reds bring up if Gonzo goes on the DL. Their top rated SS is Valakia, and he is having trouble staying above the Mendoza line at AAA. The Reds do have a SS at AA, who was drafted out of the University of Mississippi who is hitting the ball pretty well.

I believe the Reds were 1 - 10 with runners in scoring position. Terrible!!!!!!

I forgot that McDonald is on the big league club, so bringing Gomes up probably would be too many OF. Unless one of them (other than Hairston) plays everyday. You could bring Gomes up & have him play against lefties in LF. Have Hairston fill the utility role (where he's best). Gomes also played some 1st base in the spring, although it's difficult justifying any move that takes Votto out of the lineup.

 

I mentioned in last week's thread (or the week before) something about Castillo. I love his versatility and the fact that he's a switch hitter. He can play just about any position, including catcher. I'd be fine with moving him up, although I have no idea how he's doing in the minors...

The more I think about it, the more I hope Gomes is brought up. If for no other reason, that should take Hairston out of the everday lineup (unless he starts at SS.)

 

Hairston is 7/44 -- .159 AVG. He has 9 K's & 11 Total bases. :irked:

 

Dickerson is 10/49 -- .204 AVG. He has 17 K's & 16 Total bases.

 

Nix is 10/30 -- .333 AVG. 10 K's (didn't realize it was that high) & 19 total bases.

 

Not saying that total bases has any relevance to anything, I just thought it was interesting (sad?) that our starting LF's have as many K's as total bases. :lol:

 

I hope we bring up Gomes & play him (or Nix) daily in left. No real reason to bring up Castillo to fill the utility man position when that has been Hairston's primary role for his entire careeer...

He's played in 15 games for Louisville and in 48 AB's is hitting .208 with 0 Hr's and 0 RBI's. Gomes has played in 21 games and is hitting .243 with 3 HR's and 11 RBI's. To date, the most productive OF in Louisville has been Wes Bankston. In 21 games the 26 year old is batting .280 with 6 HR's and 18 RBI's.
