Love Gabbard and Popp in open court. Will be interesting to see if Boone plays that style this season.

You never know, but I don't think they will because their coach seems to prefer the half court game, especially, when it comes to crunch time. They should open it up IMO because they won't be very tall other than Earls. Last year, the focus was more on half court game and feeding Earls and McFarland in the post. I do think Trevon Brown will be a good asset inside on offense with his wide body.

I would love to see them go that route but will Popp be able to crack the rotation? He sat most of the second half of the season last year. He did not appear to be in good graces with the Boone coaching staff.

There were also a lot of rumors about Popp choosing to go to Ryle High School next year. Don't know if there is any truth to this rumor. I think he has a much better chance of playing at Ryle than Boone.

Other stats to look at include assists per minute, turnovers per minute, steals per minute, points given up per minute to the person they are guarding, turnover to posession ratio, assist to possession ratiio, shooting percentage, FT percentage, 3-pt percentage, points per minute, rebounds per minute, etc. Plus there are plenty of intangibles like court vision, hustle, bad vs. good decisions, etc. Some guards do better in certain styles of offenses than others too, e.g., half-court vs. push the ball in open court, etc. Open-court, push-the-ball offense is probably better suited to Boone's guards than a slower half-court game.

You are right, there are many, many different things to look at. I used these stats because they are more specific to PG's, simply because they are generally the player on the team who handles the ball most. You can get the assist to turnover ratio by looking at the stats that were provided in the prior post. But I agree, there are many other things that can be looked at, such as: FT percentage (Very key!), court vision, and decision making. This was just a snap shot.

I agree with the bolded statement above. And, I think a Popp acquisition would be huge for Ryle, and could make them a more dangerous team. I have also heard the rumors, but I've also been told that he is just going to stay at Boone. So, I guess we'll have to wait that one out.

Why do you think his minutes decreased so rapidly, and so often? Was it because of his relationship with the coach?

Style of play also affects stats for PG. Teams that push the ball up the court tend to have more possessions. More possessions lead to more assists but also more opportunities to turn the ball over. Since you used Scott pg as lead example if you watched Scott play every possession, every inbounds play ran thru their soph pg. Already been discussed that he plays pretty much every minute and probably averaged 30 minutes per game last season. I don't think it would be a stretch to say he had as much responsibility as any player on any team in N Ky.

As far as "getting into his head" seems like a pretty competitive kid and probably gets himself into some situations that his coaches would prefer he would avoid. Some of his making and some because he refuses to back down.

Yeah, this is quite possible. That being said, if he had that much responsibility as a sophomore it's safe to say that he will certainly be the go to guy next season. He'll have a lot riding on him. But hey, good for him. To be given that much responsibility as a sophomore and junior says something, and will only help him in the long run.

There is no PG in NKY with bigger pipes than Gabbard. That kid is strong and athletic.

Have heard the rumors but have also heard Popp will be staying at Boone Co. Think Popp is a very nice player who complements Gabbard especially if Boone were to play a more uptempo style. If boone were to still play more deliberate style I think Popp gives them legit 3 point shooter to stretch defense and provide secondary ball handler.

Have watched Popp play for a number of years and hope that he gets an opportunity to play a big role for Boone this year and go out with a big senior year.

Completely agree. I just dont understand why he isnt, or wasnt used a little more last year. Who knows, maybe this year they will get him more involved, which would benefit Boone IMO.

Agree. He really bulked up over the last year or so!

Popp and Gabbard are very good together. They are the best guard combination in NKY IMO. Boone needs to run a true two-guard offense to take the most advantage of both players. I thought they mostly played a 1G offense. Popp can shoot the 3 when he has the green light and confidence, but I think he is a quick slasher and can finish well.

Boone would be foolish not to utilize Popp this season. He has succeeded in school and AAU ball for several years on different teams. Maybe it is more of a fundamental personality/style conflict between him and his coach. If that is it, hopefully they can put both their differences aside for the good of Boone's team. He always seems to bust his butt on the playing floor.

Whereever he ends up, I hope he gets to play a lot his senior year, because he is too good to sit the bench. I think he would start on any other team in NKY.

Who is Popp playing AAU with this summer?

I wouldn't go that far. I'd say there are atleast 2 guard combinations better than those two:

Ricardo and Jeremiah Johnson- Holmes

Stephen Kowolonek and George Grote- Highlands

Could this Popp debacle of last year be do to the play of McFarland? I mean, he seemed to be a combo of positions 1-3 at times. Just a thought.
