April 26, 200917 yr Congrats to Mike! Talked to him a few weeks ago, he was really enjoying the process.
April 26, 200917 yr ESPN Radio was hammering this choice, too ... saying Mitchell would've gone in the late rounds, if at all.
April 26, 200917 yr I'd heard/read had been moving up the draft board quite a bit in the last few weeks. Best of luck to the young man. From NFL.com: Overview Mitchell wasn't invited to the NFL Scouting Combine and wasn't mentioned as a player of note in the Ohio Pro Day report, though he pulled a hamstring during the event. He ran a 4.32-second 40-yard dash and he did 21 repetitions of 225 pounds on the bench press to go along with a 37 1/2-inch broad jump and a 10-foot, 3-inch broad jump. He says he can play either safety position, though he's listed as a strong safety. He told the San Francisco Chronicle, "I can do both things. I can do both very well. At strong safety, I can be a very imposing force against the run and in the pass game. At free, I can be a guy who covers well and gets interceptions. I have a lot of God-given gifts than can really help, especially an organization that needs a safety." He drew interest from at least nine teams, among them the Raiders, Bears, Bengals, Browns, Packers, Saints, Texans, Colts and Panthers. He chatted with the Chicago Sun-Times leading up to the draft about his rising stock. "They look at my body and I'm a lean guy, I'm strong, I'm fast, I run a 4.43 40, so I've got some pretty athletic tools to go along with size. When they see my measureables and then see my highlight tape -- I think everyone's highlight tape is amazing -- they see a mixture of size and speed and hitting. I think teams say, 'This guy can play,' even though I went to a smaller school." During his visit with the Raiders, he told the San Francisco Chronicle that he was excited about the possibility of joining the Silver and Black: "It went amazing, absolutely amazing. Everything I thought it would be. This team has the most history of any franchise in football." In 2008, he started 11 games, missing the Bowling Green game due to injury ... He finished in a tie for eighth in INT return yards ... He had 62 tackles during his senior season, including 4.5 tackles for a loss ... He had three interceptions and five pass breakups. In 2007, he also played in 11 games ... He was third in tackles with 74 and had two INTs ... He had four tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks ... He had career bests in tackles (14) and interceptions in a game (two) against Wyoming (Sept. 22). In 2006, he started eight games and played in all 14 games ... He had 55 tackles, good for fourth on the team ... He had five tackles for a loss and a sack and had two INTs ... He grabbed his first career pick in a game at Eastern Michigan. In 2005, he played in nine games as a true freshman ... He had 21 tackles, two pass break-ups and one forced fumble ... His first game action came against Pittsburgh. High School Mitchell is a three-year letterwinner ... He had 87 tackles in his senior season ... Forced three fumbles and recovered two ... Scored one defensive touchdown in 2004 ... Twice named a Northern Kentucky All-Star ... Honorable mention all-state as a senior ... Led the Bluebirds to a state title in 2004. Edited April 26, 200917 yr by colonel-fan
April 26, 200917 yr They kept saying he ran a 4.6 on Sirius, and I knew that I read on BGP that he was at least a 4.4 guy.
April 26, 200917 yr Good for Mike. You can tell he thinks he belongs. I hope he proves everybody wrong, but this is the 1st time ever I've been thankful that the Bengals have Mike Brown. Rough day for Al Davis.
April 26, 200917 yr I am very happy for Mike and I hope he proves all the detractors wrong. Although it was a bad pick... I am also excited for Mike and hope he produces in the league.
April 26, 200917 yr What is the story on this kid? Check the thread on him in the classics section lol.
April 26, 200917 yr Was he really just honorable mention all state? How did that happen? Well, keep in mind that he missed some games during his senior year on account of injuries... I believe he even missed the regular-season Highlands-CovCath game. And of course, he missed the state title game on account of the ineligibility issue.
April 26, 200917 yr Was he really just honorable mention all state? How did that happen? Mike was an All BGP DB (and as most of you know we only have a 1st team) so maybe we were on to something.
April 26, 200917 yr Congrats to Mike and his family. When I first heard the pick, I thought to myself, "why does name ring a bell?" Mike may have a great career, but Oakland blew it on this one. They probably could've picked him in 3-4 rounds later.
April 26, 200917 yr Well, keep in mind that he missed some games during his senior year on account of injuries... I believe he even missed the regular-season Highlands-CovCath game. . He played in both CCH games that year.
April 26, 200917 yr Mike said that the Bears indicated yesterday that they might take him at 49 and told him to stay close to his phone.
