Admittedly, the theory of natural law isn't something I'm very well versed in. I can buy the concept at face value...but it is too broad of a concept to apply to everything. Someone who is homosexual would tell you that these are natural urges and thus a part of natural law. Furthermore if I understand the idea of natural law correctly (which admittedly I might not) the idea of killing an unhealthy baby which is common behavior in many animals (including other Primates) is a part of of natural law.

 

As our government is currently set up I have no issue with government sanctioned unions mainly for purposes of determining ones partner. Frankly I could care less what the official name is, as it is, the government seems set to call this union "marriage". I think the problem with most religious people is they can't make the distinction that for many marriage is a secular bond and has nothing to do with the church. Since the government sanctions this bond it should be separate from the church, as our government is supposedly a secular one.

 

If government was set up in the Utopian fashion of my dreams there would be no need for it at all.

Natural law is NOT simply what occurs in nature. Perhaps I am misusing the term, but to me natural law refers to the set of laws that govern the universe. These laws are not created by humans but discovered, through reason.

 

Looking at it through purely cold, calculating reason, I don't see of what benefit gay marriage does to society and why the government should promote and encourage it. At least heterosexual marriage has the potential for child-bearing and therefore future tax revenue (even though, as stated, this is why a child-tax credit makes sense and marriage doesn't, because childless heterosexual couples provide the state with the same lack of benefits).

 

Furthermore, I really think that homosexuality is just unnatural (my reasons are a bit graphic, perhaps PM me if you want). But either way, I'm not proposing making homosexuality to be illegal- to me, that is government intrusion. But I don't think it is the right of government to actively promote and encourage behavior that provides no benefit to society.

It is my understanding that natural law has many uses and interpretations. It sounds like you are using something more akin to Hobbes natural law.

 

If you are strictly looking at it from the perspective of the benefit to government there are many ways to achieve this benefit without marriage. One is sex for procreation done outside of a marrriage. Also, as PR and I have discussed there are scientific advances that eliminate any need for sex to create life.

 

As a Libertarian you should realize that by allowing something, you aren't promoting it, you are just giving people the choice. And feel free to shoot me the PM.

I guess people who think that marriage should be between a man and a woman are supposed to change their minds and cater to Perez Hilton and people who believe that gays should have the right to be married. Isn't that the way this country is ran nowadays?

Perez Hilton (the self professed queen of all media) commented on his blog later that her answer was 'the worst answer in pageant history' that she was dumb and that if she would have won he would have 'gone up on the stage and ripped the crown off her head'. What I'm trying to say is that since you have to have a state issued license to be legally married, it is a secular bond. So in the Gay Marriage debate, what the bible says doesn't mean anything, last time I checked there was a separation between church and state.
