You should state that as your opinion and not a fact, because just maybe it is the freedom that makes America great, including the freedom to not have faith in God and applying the virtues of the bible. Just saying, hows "insert therocracy here" doing on the great nation scale?

I don't know anyone on this board I would trust as the "sole repository of facts". I think it is pretty much implied that every post on this board is essentially an "opinion".

Our Founding Fathers were more influenced by Hobbes and Locke than they were the words of Moses or Christ. The social contract theory espoused by enlightenment thinkers (we give up certain rights and privileges to a government that helps us to live peaceably together) is the basis of our government. Jefferson borrowed heavily from Locke in his writing of the declaration when he said that when a government no longer meets its end of the social contract we need to overthrow it. Our country is great because we have found a way to assess the government and make changes every four years. Jefferson's election in 1800 is even called 'the Revolution of 1800.'

 

Hammurabis laws are as big an influence as the 10 Commandments, and they are older than the 10 commandments.

 

Why is it important for "you guys" to have us be a Christian Country . . . Christ does not need to power of the government to do what needs to be done in this world (ironic coming from me isn't it) Christ needs people who love other people more than they love themselves.

 

Again, we are upset when the POTUS covers up IHS, there was not that much outrage when Ridge (i think, no it wasn't him, but whomever) covered up Lady Liberty. Was he ashamed of liberty? I think that could be argued.

 

But why no posts from the conservatives about the pay gap between CEOs and workers when Jesus talks so much about taking care of the poor.

As far as the poor go I as a conservative feel it is important to help the poor. But I feel it's the place of the church to do it not the government. I will give to the poor because I want to help them not because the government makes me.

Kinda hard to get people to worship at the altar of government, the power of the state and the authority of the esteemed leader if they're already committed to a Divine Being.

Faith in God and belief in the truth of, and application of the virtues and morals of the Bible have done more to make America great than any other influence in our history. Removing ourselves from this foundation is a recipe for disaster.

 

Idiots who insist upon covering up emblems representing the things that undergird our independence and success as a nation do not deserve to be in any kind of leadership position... at all.

 

You must have missed the many German Christians who bought into Nationalism, only to wake up when it was too late.

 

Same is true in this country at times, when the Nation is greater than the Kingdom of God.

I would dispute that this Republic was based solely on our concepts of Religious foundations. I think History would as well.

 

However the last paragraph is the intriguing one to me.

 

If I were to say, "Sure, the founding fathers were great men of faith and practitioners of discipleship who wanted to make certain we are rooted squarely on the Bible and it's truths" - what would that mean?

 

It would mean that the founding fathers "talked a big game" in invoking faith and God in their words but were lousy practitioners of it in the common society. From slavery to laws that refused to acknowledge "all men as created equal" to public policy that allowed whole people of another race to be slaughtered and dispossesed all in the name of "Manifest (read God) Destiny."

 

Give me people that practice it much more than say it any day of the week and twice on Sundays. :thumb:
