This topic discusses greatest bluebirds and many times goes one tell of a players accomplishments in college and many times onto the pros. Well, I was thinking about some of the greatest Bluebirds and names like Homer Rice, star at Higlands in the 40's, went on to be a star at Centre College, and of course came back to Fort Thomas and lead them to state championships and then went on to coach at various colleges and even a stint in the pros. Then you have Roger Walz, who lead Highlands to state championships as a QB, went on to play at UC and UK, then went on to coach Highlands to win a state championship at Highlands in '75. That brings me to Dale Mueller, played on a state championship team in '68, or maybe it was '70, and has come back to Highlands to probably be the winningest coach in Highlands all time history, (which is impressive) with I think 5 state championships to his credit.

 

You really can't have a "greatest Bluebird" . It takes a "team" to be a Bluebird.

The greatest Bluebird must have been the one that appeared in the Song of the South!:lol:

Homer Rice is returning to Fort Thomas from Atlanta to be honored as the Highlands High School "Alumni of the Year." The Awards Dinner takes place on Saturday, May 9 at 6 p.m. at the Carnegie in Newport. The public is invited. Lorraine Giglia will be honored as Highlands "Teacher of the Year" that same night.

Who is the best or greatest football player at Highlands? In my opinion to select such an individual is not what Highlands’ football is about. Highlands Football is about TEAM.

 

Football is a TEAM sport. The greatest football player is every young man who has put on the Highlands’ uniform. They are Highlands’ Best.

Sorry but I wouldn't consider him the best on the team either year he started. He was a very good player. Better beyond his high school years. Now if that is the criteria for determining "Best Bluebird" ever, then yes he would be from his years playing. But I would bet he wouldn't end up in the top 10, High School and college included.

 

Now to all that say it's a "Team" thing. Well yeah it is when you are winning a State Championship, but the question is who was the greatest Bluebird of them all? I'm sure you all have an opinion. Your allowed to say it. C'mon it won't hurt. It's your opinion!

Given what he's accomplished on offense (WR), defense (DB) and special teams (returner) so far, and that he's due to play yet another position on offense (RB) his senior year, I'm wondering if Austin Collinsworth will be right in the mix of this conversation when his career is over.

I agree with others on here. No way can you really pin point one player as the greatest ever. There has been so many that because of the talent around them it made them stand out and made the program much better. But if I had to vote for best ever that I saw play it would be Brett Hamblin. No one individual could score from any place on the field at any time like he did regardless of the situation or the way he did it. Recieving, running play, interception, punt return, kick off return, etc, etc. And you know he is also the type of guy that would tell you it was all about the other players that made him great.

I don't think where someone went after high school has any real bearing on how good they were in high school. Jeff Kremer was a stud and I am a huge fan of his. However, Dave Fischer was the best player on that team.

I'm sure Jeff would agree with you RR. He'll be the first to tell you he was surrounded with great players in a great program.
