UK Fans - Pros and Cons

Featured Replies

Cons: Talk show callers are the least articulate people in the nation. Don't respect coaches who win national championships. Have beyond realistic expectations of success. They show astonishment when the rest of the world doesn't revolve around UK basketball. Runs off coaches. Treats poorly performing players very poorly. Treats well performing players a little to well. Takes baskeball rivalry beyond the court even as far as state government. Have a superiority complex. Have no appreciation for the "building process" in college athletics. A larger than comfortable hint of racism permiates through. Start personal rumors with blatantly false accusations, coaches, opponets, and families. Think people remember NCAA championships before the 1960's.

Ahh yes. Nothing says UK fan more than some good ole fashion racism

If you live in an area were it doesn't show, that's great. I can't say the same.

Pros: To many to list. I Love the Big Blue

Cons: We have Obnoxious Fans and at one time I may have been one of those. BCG has changed my outlook and I believe for the good.

You nailed a few things right but fail to menton that some of the things you cited are not exclusive to UK and KY.

I agree there are some real losers at the call-in shows but have you ever heard some of the calls coming in to Roy Williams and Woody Durham in NC? Some of them are just as bad.

Runs off coaches is not exclusively UK. UNC gave Matt Doherty how long? And he was a graduate. It's not like UL gave Denny Crum a lovely goodbye as they strong armed him out the door.

Didn't get the State reference. The Legislature grand standed in the mid 80's to "make" UL and UK play that was in the works and a natural course after the '83 Dream Game.

A superiority complex is no different at other power schools. UNC has one, as does Duke. Trust me, I live beside them. :D

Otherwise I think your post is very accurate, just not exclusive. :thumb:

We live in America. Racism is prevalent everywhere; but there is a stigma many love to put on people that live in the south that the vast majority of people are racist. And due to evidence that points to Adolph Rupp being a bigot, UK fans are more often than not lumped in to that category.

UK fan is not allowed to embrace titles and "live in the past" as far as basketball accomplishments go that took place 30 years ago, but we have somehow by non-apologists bequeathed all racial sentiments that were alive 40 + years ago. :idunno:

Despite us living in the South (and maybe I am naive), I give Kentucky and America a lot more credit than that.

Absolutely.

I believe he is thinking in terms of state funding for the schools and their programs, etc.

I have lived my entire life in Kentucky, and that isn't the way I remember it. Kentucky seemed to have no interest in playing Louisville until after the "Dream Game" ... maybe it would have happened, but the legislature made sure it would happen. It was a shame it had to get to that point.

Even now, some UK fans look upon Louisville as the "little brother" ... just had to throw in that Eddie Sutton reference.

Absolutely.

Hagan and Hall had no interest but I believe Singletary did and was pushing harder each year. I agree it was a shame it took so long to get the two together. In fact, the funny thing to me was how many of my UL fans couldn't wait for that chance and then in the Dream Game were shocked at how close UK actually played a better Cards team.

Funny thing is that this 'evidence' comes from people who never met the man and some who couldn't tell you what he looked like if they saw a picture of him.

Movies like "Glory Road" build on these assumptions and even had false implications in that movie (this was even from the players for Texas Western). Fact is that Rupp wanted to win, appealed to the SEC on 2 different occasions to integrate, advised African American players that he visited honestly that he could not guarantee their safety, nor his own, in many SEC cities, made calls on behalf of recruits that he was afraid to bring to UK. All those who actually knew him tell a different story than those who did not. I will take their word before writers like Feinstein and others who never even met the man.

I also hate the assumption that everyone in the south is a bigot. But remember this, ... UK recruited and signed the first African American football player in the SEC (1964 Nate Northington) and he was also the first black player to participate in a game featuring 2 SEC teams. But nobody ever talks about that. (BTW, Charlie Bradshaw was the coach). UK wanted to sign black players before this, but even the football coaches had told recruits that the SEC was fighting integration and they feared for the safety of these young men. Thank goodness that Coach Bradshaw signed Northington and opened the door in the SEC for the other schools to begin to do the right thing.
