Holmes has struggled with presses this season, but I wouldn't say either team would win by double digits. Holmes can and loves to run up and down so I'm not sure what game you went to but Holmes is a running team that gets most their points of their defense. These are two of the three best teams left and this game would be great. I would take Holmes by 2.

I'm with you on all accounts. Expanding on your question, Holmes has not shown that they are capable of controlling the tempo, so if Elliott wanted to run and aviod going slow with Holmes, the Bulldogs would probably play along, because I'm not too sure they could slow it down anyhow because Elliott has shown that they're a team that can control the tempo, but the Bulldogs have not. You know Holmes just can't wait to get out and run if given the chance. I never get the impression that they enjoy slow ball one bit because they have to fight their urge to break out all the time. Logically if they could slow it down on Elliott they increase their chances, but I don't see them missing a chance to run if they are given one. My gut is telling me it's going to be a serious running game, but I can't begin to say who would win if this is the case.

If they take the air out of the ball, control the tempo and slow it way down, I think they win.

 

If they play at a medium pace, meaning that they run selectively but still do a good job of dictating rather than reacting, I think they have a great chance to win.

 

From the posts I've read, I'm getting the impression that people think Holmes will try to go toe-to-toe with Elliott County in a shootout. I think that's a mistake.

 

Regardless, I don't expect to see this game. I think one or both of them will be gone before Saturday morning. Just a hunch...

What was the final score of that game? In the 60's? From what I could gather from the highlights, Holmes trailed for a lot of that game. How good is Largo, because it didn't look like they were overwhelmed by Holmes "running" game?

 

Additionally, I think the Holmes and EC definitions of running are about 20 points difference. When you get used to playing games in the 30's and 40's, I suppose the 60's feel like warp speed. Conversely, a game in the 60's would be frustrating when you average almost 86 per game. When I say a running game, anything under 70 doesn't qualify. Your definition might be different.

Run slow ?:idunno:...........Holmes hasn't broke 70 a whole lot this season.

Holmes is a defensive-minded team. EC is an offensive-minded team. Holmes would force EC into some longer possessions than they are used to. Holmes would alter a lot more shots than EC is used to. EC would definitely force tempo but I don't see the game getting out of the 60's. I think Holmes would prevail by 5-6 points but would not be surprised if EC won. If EC hits over 45% from the field, they win.

Hypothetical matchup - Elliott Co. vs. Holmes

Homes is just so "long and athletic" that I don't see how a slow, non-athletic, poor ball-handling team like Elliott County could ever give them a good game.

I get tired of seeing things like this posted, Elliott has won three straight regional titles, no one is underestimating their players or their skills. Just because they have an enrollment of 593 (or whatever it is), does not automatically make them an underdog.

 

I think that a team that is long, will cause problems for a team that is not very big outside of one player, especially when the smaller team likes the perimeter shot. Putting a long arm out to contest every shot will fluster a shooter and cause them to miss some shots. Having seen both teams play, I think Holmes plays to the style their opponents do, for those that don't think they can run watch the Largo highlights or the Scott County highlights. And Scott county, by the way, was a team a lot of people were saying had the inside track to win state all season.

Ok, I watched the highlights, did they slow down the film speed ? If they didn't their fast is about average for Elliott Co.. So they will need another gear. One that will last for a whole game.:lol:
