The biggest problem with the offense last year was injuries. It had nothing to do with play calling, actually the creative play calling actually made a few of the games more competitive (for a half) than they should've been. Last year the team was way too thin, and had too many injuries.

Being good at football isn't just about having 1, 2, or 3 stud players. Even the last few years (prior to last year) when Lincoln was having success they had some nice players, but the Jr. and Soph. class was strong those years and were under appreciated. I agree 100% I am in no rush. I think Coach Settles will do a great job with these boys. I know he and his staff have already been combing the halls of Lincoln County High School asking young men to come out and play football. I think that is great. These kids that don't play miss out on the chance to play a team sport often don't know what they are missing out on.

We now have a O.C. and last year didn't have much of one........:irked:

 

Darren Yaden is a class act and doesn't deserve this and maby you would like to call the plays this comming football season.

You also have to start running your offense and defense in middle school,so that when they get to highschool you just can add on to what they already know.

I'm not a politically correct knid of guy, white is white and black is black, if Darren was OC this year we could expect the same outcome as last. Sorry but that how it is.. Look everyone likes Darren, In the 90's his system worked, but in todays High School Football you just need more than he could offer. I wish him the best also, and he is a great guy.

No you dont and good luck trying to tell Bullitt East, Bell County, Beechwood and even Highlands that. All of whom were playing for and/or won state championshis this year. None of them were complicated in their schemes; offensively or defensely.

 

I'll give you another one even closer to home, Larry French was and is a KISS guy (Keep it Simple Stupid). Marty Jaggers was that way at Lincoln and so was Larry Phillips. The three most successful coaches in Lincoln history all believed in the basics and doing them well.

 

It sickens me to watch teams that dont have the numbers and/or talent try to look like the NY Giants. You dont need 20 different formations and 20 different plays.

While I agree with your underlying premise of keeping it simple whenever possible, I have to point out that Highlands O and D is more complicated than it may appear to be from the stands. With a son that plays on the O, I'm pretty familiar with the playbook and it is much, much more sophisticated than the O we ran back in the day. I think part of the reason it looks pretty simple is that Dale is very prepared for opponents and has a pretty good feel for what plays will/should work. If he is correct, opponents only see a small part of the playbook because he sticks to those plays. For example, we run the counter extremely well and run it a lot because it works. There are lots of plays (both run and pass) and lots of formations that are practiced all week that aren't used in the games unless absolutely necessary.

 

I agree that coaches shouldn't overly complicate things, but a coach must have his team prepared to run different plays, formations and stunts if the game calls for it. This won't be popular in Paintsville, but once Highlands returned the fumble for a touchdown and a two td lead in the second half, I felt very, very good about our chances of beating Johnson Central. With our speed in the defensive secondary, I didn't think JC would be able to break off long touchdown runs and I didn't feel that JC had developed enough of a passing game to be successful against our D. Some will argue that it wasn't the lack of a passing game that cost JC, but rather it was the fumble. Well 17 and 18 year old kids are going to make mistakes. They are kids. Pros who are paid millions and practice a lot more than high school kids make mistakes. So it's going to happen with high school kids. Coaches have to anticipate that and be ready to handle it. Heck, if Highlands hadn't developed a good passing game, we'd have never beat Station and thus had not won state. While I am a run first and run it until they stop it kind of guy, I fully agree and acknowledge that a team must be able to pass the ball effectively and with confidence. They must be ready and able to pass the ball when the circumstances necessitate it.

 

So while I agree that a coach should not overly complicate things and have a NY Giants playbook, in my opinion there must be some diversity in the playbook and an ability to do more than just execute 4 or 5 plays if a team wants to be successful at the highest level.

Coach Settles came into a no win situation last season. They graduated 20 some odd seniors and had a young team playing in a tough district-Given a chance he will do well.
