Elliot did fine against big atheletic teams this year ie Ballard, Mason!

 

Ballard isn't exactly a big team. They have nobody over 6'4 and both of their starting guards are under 6'0. Holmes starts 3 kids who are 6'4 or bigger and at times you'll see 6'2 Housely/D. Johnson, 6'4 J. Johnson, 6'5 R. Johnson, 6'6 Rice, and 6'7 Pittman in there.

 

Mason also isn't that athletic either. Barner and Middleton are but other than that they aren't a team that's going to run and gun. Mason gets by on playing tough defense and forcing turnovers by using their depth and pressing. Mason is a decent size team though.

Elliott Co. has not needed to play defense, doesen't mean they can't. If they play Holmes they will play both ends of the floor. Holmes has scored 70+ eight times this year and Elliott has scored below 70 only twice this season. No team is going to hold Elliott in the low 30's, won't happen. Most may not know this but Elliott Co.s boys have played over 1500 games together, so they have a little experience too." Elliott gives up almost 60 ppg. Holmes on the year is giving up just 46 ppg." I'll add to that , Holmes has averaged 60 ppg and Elliott has averaged 86 ppg. I really hope they get to this game.

 

Don't get too caught up in how many points a team averages. It hasn't seemed to matter this year against Holmes. Scott Co averages in the low 80's on the year and was held to 65 by Holmes. Bryan Station averages in the low 80's as well and was held to 56. Ballard averages in the high 60's, low 70's and was held to 41, and last but not least, Boone averages 62 ppg and was held to 45 and 29 against Holmes. How many of those teams are still playing?

 

Again, offense sells tickets, defense wins championships.

 

I heard these same comments last year before Holmes played high scoring Paintsville and Lexcath...all Holmes did in those two games was hold both to season lows offensively on their way to the state title game....where they also held a loaded Mason County team to their third lowest output of the year.

Holmes because of their defense.

 

They're offense ain't half bad either. They can play with the best of em on the offensive end. I definitely think that they are a complete team that will bring NKY that long awaited second State Title!!

I pick Elliott Co. because they are the only home team in the tournament.

If they get past the first game, they will have 20,000 fans to push them on.

Not everyone wants them to win the state title. I'm sure they'll have a nice following but let's not act like they're the only team that will bring a crowd with them and everyone will be rooting against who they're playing.

I honestly believe the Royals have a decent chance of winning it again, especially if they can hit a few free throws.

Eastern is my pick. I think they have an easier path to Saturday night than does Holmes, Mason, Shelby Valley, Elliott, or Catholic.

Elliott County is a crowd favorite. I think what he's implying is that the majority of neutral observers will be behind Elliott County.

Yeah that is about right. I have been to the state tournament since I was little and have seen the crowd (neutral fans) get behind the small schools, country schools, underdogs, etc... I just think Elliott Co. will have that this year.

And the majority of the crowd is neutral observers. For Elliott, it's going to feel like a home game.

That's when the Sweet 16 gets exciting, IMO. Pretty much every team brings a good crowd from home. It's when all the neutral crowd gets behind somebody, the place gets loud and you can really feel the excitement.
