Kudos to Henry County HS and the 8th Region!

With all the fuss and turmoil we're hearing about some issues in the other region tournaments, I'm particularly gratified at the welcome everyone receives at Henry County HS and the 8th Region boys tournament and the good folks in New Castle deserve a tip of the hat.

The 8th Region has been held at Henry County HS' 5500 seat gym since 1963 - the longest tenure of any region tournament at the one venue - and Henry County HS continues to do a fantastic job of hosting. This, despite the fact HCHS is currently undergoing a massive remodeling project that has made some things - like parking - temporarily a little awkward.

The fans appreciate great seats, sold as general admission. The kids have their student sections on the side next to the floor, as it should be. The pep bands occupy the upper corners. And several broadcasters have been welcomed to the event at no charge - Grant County cable, WXLN radio (Shelbyville, covering Shelby County), Tri-State Sports (Buttels, covering the NKY teams), and Pegasus Sports, which broadcasts each game of the tournament.

Congrats to AD Todd Gilley and the rest of the Henry Countians who put on the 8th Region boys' tournament. Thanks for putting together a top-notch event! :thumb:

As long as Kemp Martin's not there, I'll feel OK about attending.

The boys regional tournament is the premier event in the 8th region and should be held in a first class facility. There is no question that Henry Co. has the seating capacity and the location. I think most coaches and fans would like to see continued improvements to the facility since it is pretty old. Henry County does do a nice job of running the tourney also.

I wish they had a scoreboard that showed the fouls on it.

Anyone have any photos of this gym? I would like to see it but have never been in it...

There are a few on the SK Blog from their game the other night. http://www.skpioneers.blogspot.com Go down about 3 stories.

You can't beat the place for atmosphere although the gym could use a facelift. You almost need a flashlight to find your seat the place is so dark.

Scoreboard is 4 sided and hangs in the middle of the floor. The announcers are perched at the top in a plexiglass booth which it makes a little challenging to get fouls announced correctly.

The gym and school is located in a great place for all of the teams in the region with maybe one or two teams having to travel 1 hour to more to reach the gym. The construction is campus is something that is hard to deal with, but it is needed for all of the improvements that are happening to the gym. There will be a wireless mic for the new sound system that will be in place for next years games so another radio station could boardcast from the location. The seating is great, without a real bad seat in the gym. The floor was recently touched up, and gets refinished more often than other gyms. The locker rooms are being remodeled during the summer as well. The dirt spots that are located around the school will be parking so that means parking along the road will not be needed unless its the championship game!

I love going to the 8th region tournament at Henry. I have been to at least 39 in a row!Even if I have no "dog in the fight' I will still go just for the atmosphere. I have seen the place locked down by the fire marshall for overcrowding and there were still 1000-1500 still outside waiting to get in. Every seat full and 10 deep in the end zone.

I still remember the first time I attended the 8th region tournament when SK came aboard. The first thing I thought was, I would love to still be in the 9th but that gym is better than anything we had in the 9th (HS wise). It makes for a very nice atmosphere, and the improvements are very incouraging.

What? A regional tournament held in a centrally located high school gymnasium that happens to be the largest one in the region? Say it an't so!:D

Totally agree with the Colonel. Henry County and the folks in the 8th Region have always been great to work with. I've been going down for 4 years now and although it is a bit of a haul from the house. (90 minutes), I don't mind so much due to the way we are welcomed and treated. Coach Gilley and everyone at the school are great to work with.

I asked about the renovations while I was there last week and if they were going to do anything with the current gym. I was told that the locker rooms and bathrooms were going to be upgraded. They are adding a practice gym on the front of the main gym currently. I'll try to get some pictures of the new areas. The campus will be very nice when completed.
