For whatever reason, I've never seen this doc. I love the ones he did on WWII, baseball and jazz music, I'm sure it's great. I guess the main reasons I've never seen it is A) My terribly short attention span and B) The fact my descendants didn't come to this country until decades after the Civil War was fought. I just was always far more interested in WWI and WWII, and European history in general (my minor was history).

Great documentary. My son and I spent a sunrise on the rocks of Devil's Den at Gettysburg 4 years ago. We're both big Civil War buffs and this is a great show.

I visited Gettysburg around 1997. Loved every minute of it. When you're on Little Round Top or in the rocks of Devil's Den, it's almost like you can feel the presence of the people who engaged in that great battle.

 

We also toured Antietam Battlefield on the same vacation.

There is just something about the Civil War that draws me, especially in the last 10 years or so. This documentary really touches me and I can't turn away from it.

To piggyback on this, I think my lack of personal attachment to the Civil War is why I've always found it extremely amusing and kind of pathetic that there are still people fighting the Civil War 150 years later. Most notably, the "heritage, not hate" folks who try to defend the Stars'n'Bars.

I grew up just outside of Baltimore, MD. We used to go to Gettysburg, Antietam and Frederick fairly often when I was a kid.:thumb:

I would love to find the Civil War series and sit down and watch it as uninterrupted as possible. Maybe the local library has it available.

You can definitely feel something is there at Gettysburg.

It was an ancient Indian battlefield centuries before we ripped each other apart on it.

Some places just have that "sense" about them.

 

 

I had a Great-Great Uncle that fought there with the 26th NC, CSA, I had a great-great Grandfather that fought with the 30th KY Mounted Infantry, USA, attatched to Stoneman's Cav. (Like from the song by the Band "the Night They Drove Old Dixie Down") that fought in southwestern VA. it formed up in Pulaski. I had another great-great uncle that fought with the 4th KY Cav CSA.

(I kind of always wanted to know what Christmas was like when all these guys got together after the war. The 30th vet was a choice of jail or the army, so he chose army.)

 

 

I have numerous Yanks on Mom's side. She was from about 30 miles north of Gettysburg.

I think she was kin to the Arnold's that ran a dry goods store in Gettysburg at the time of the battle.

I've seen it in a couple libraries. That would be one marathon session!

I've recommended this book several times here, but "Confederates in the Attic" by Tony Horwitz is a great read concerning that vary topic.
