Madison, played well and Dominique, is a very, very talented player. I don't want to take anything away from their State Championship.

 

But, hats off to the South Laurel, boys... They had a hard road to the Championship game. This team was not the most athletic team in the tournment...but played with so much heart in every game. Yes, fatigue set in and became a factor for South.

 

Dominique, was absolutely the top player in the tournament I thought he really stuck out in his games. His ability to get to the basket was very nice. He will be one of the top Freshmen next year. He will be fun to watch in the future....

 

I thought Sanders had a good tournament for South, to get them to the Championship game. Sanders, played every minute of 3 games and 4 OT's Mayfield, Scott C. and Hazard. He was pressured every second of each game by every teams best defenders and doubled teamed a lot. He played hard on the defensive end and rebound well. With 2 minutes left in the second quarter of the Championship game he told his coach he needed a break. You could tell mental and physical fatigue finally set in on him. He played with so much heart in OT to get his team to the Championship game. " You cant measure Heart"

 

Congrats to SL and their tough run to the championship. I think Sanders is the best guard in the 8th grade class and I have watched him play since his days with the SUNS. Hats off to him for hanging tough.

The South/Hazard game was one of the best games I have ever seen. Wow! Both teams had multiple chances to win. South had no legs in the finals.

 

I think Hawkins was the best player I saw. I also liked the big kid from McCreary and the guard from Frankfort. I had never seen any of these 3 this season, they were very good. Sanders played extremely well and the kids from Scott County were both playing well.

 

It was a great tournament and a great season. See you guys next year!

Lincoln County was really the only team up there that was able to give Madison Middle a game. (Lincoln lost by 2 in overtime).

 

South Laurel might could have played with them if they had not played that quad OT game before that!

 

But it sure would have been nice to see that Lincoln team play Madison in the Championship instead of in the elite 8.

One of the few teams I missed. The best pt. guards I saw there were the kid from Hazard, the Hayes kid from Mayfield, the Richardson kid from Scott and the pg from Lincoln who hit some very clutch free throws down the stretch to send the Madison game into OT.

There were a lot of close games that could have went either way throughout the tournament and changed the course of the event. Madison-Lincoln was definitely not the only one.

 

Scott County was one shot away from beating South Laurel, Mayfield had chances to beat South Laurel in the third round, Rosspoint gave Scott County a scare in the second round and on and on and on. It was one of the best weekends of basketball I have witnessed.

 

But, at the end of the day regardless of anything else, Madison took the title and they obviously deserved it more than anyone.

I think they were several teams in different brackets that could play with Madison. Heck, Harrison Co.,had them beat and turned the ball over at the end several times

 

Scott Co., Mayfield, Ross Point, Clay, Sebastien, Hazard and South Laurel...

and a few more of them.

 

Mayfield is a very, very good team the took a lot out of South late Saturday night. They were strong on the boards with very quick and strong guards.

 

Scott Co., half time adjustments on South Laurel, was a great coaching move one of the best I've seen in Middle School basketball. They absolutely shut Sanders out of the lane and closed out on Sears from shooting the 3. To turn the game in to a Defensive battle and last team to score wins the game.

 

Hazard,...as their coach said," we came to play with nothing to lose...

Thats the way they played with "No fear" With the good guards and big man Hazard could match up with anyone.

 

South Laurel, on fresher legs and minds... I think the game would have been a different.

South Laurel, was Mentally fatigued from their last 3 games Mayfield, Scott Co. and Hazard. They were Physically fatigued from the Hazard Quad OT game.

 

Either 3 of these teams could have been in the Championship game...

Ian Asher Clinton County's 8th grade star who played very poorly in the 8th grade state recieved a concussion in the Pineville game Friday night. It could have led to his sub par performance in the game on Saturday. He was diagnosed Saturday night and did not get to play or dress in Clinton's 2 point opening night district loss tonight, in which foul trouble played a big part. I wouldn't look for any of Clinton's middle school players who play varsity to ever play in a middle school state tournament again. I understand now why some schools don't allow it.

I watched a lot of games this weekend and one thing I noticed was the injuries. It seemed that it was a "no blood no foul" kind of weekend.

 

I know one boy looked like he had broke his arm. It was the game just before Lincolns on Saturday. I want to say they were playing against Grant on court 1.

 

There was the bloody nose on Scott County.

 

Chris Luster on our team hurt his thumb in a game Saturday.

 

I am sure there are more.

 

I wasn't impressed with the refs. We were told they are used to high school and college. Well these boys aren't in high school or college and some calls weren't called that should of been. I think it would of saved the boys from injuries.

 

I was very impressed with some of the talent there this weekend and really enjoyed watching the games and talking to the boys from different teams. Everyone we talked to was so respectful. It was a fun weekend.

This was one of the best atmospheres for the KBA that I have been around in the three years I have been going there. Every person that I would talk to was very positive about all teams there. This is the second best show for basketball in the state behind the Sweet Sixteen. After you play your first round games on Saturday it is alot of heart to play that many games to get to Sunday.

Kind of interesting. I spoke with a good friend (a really good coach) who said they watched Twenhofel twice. They beat a really good team in Clinton County and received a lot of attention because they looked to be one of the better teams. The coach started the game against Mayfield with an entirely different 5. Said they just looked un-enthused and not very fast and they played most of the game. He did say some of the other kids played in spurts (that mostly played against Clinton Co) but he never really put them out there any length of time against Mayfield. I find that interesting as he said that was one of the strangest coached teams in the tourney. When you have a group of kids playing well keep it going!!! Anyway, Twenhofel apparently made some strong impressions. Kudos to that team. Just hope there aren't some politics going on within the team that hurt them.

 

The team that started and played the most significant minutes against Clinton County was actually 1 "starter" and 4 "bench players" for Twenhofel. They never actually had the number one team play together as a group in that Clinton County game..

 

Against Mayfield, the regular "starters" started and played a significant part of the first half, going down 23-5 @ halftime...
