SANDY HOOK — If basketball is a religion in Kentucky, then Elliott County's runnin', gunnin', lovable Lions have some of the most devout worshipers in the state.

How devout?

"After watching Elliott County the last couple years, UK basketball doesn't interest me much," said Ronald Wheeler, a life-long resident of Sandy Hook and a hoops fan most of his 73 years.

In an economically depressed area where there's not much positive news, the high school basketball team has generated pride and excitement for good reason.

The Lions have won 100 games in the past four years, including a pair of 16th Region titles, using an up-tempo style that has led the state in scoring the last two seasons...:ylsuper:

I ask this knowing that Elliott County has a good team this year, but not knowing much about their past.

How has EC fared in the state tournament their past 2 seasons?

Lost in the first round last year to Mason County 66-62.

Lost in the second round in 06/07, 92-76 to Warren Central.

I might add that Elliott County's loss to Mason County last year was the closest game that the eventual State Champion had in the tournament.

What a well written story. As I wipe the tears from my eyes after reading this all I have to say is Thank You. To Ethan, Evan, Ferg, Chris, Timmy, Jared, John Morgan, Jacob, Cody, and all the boys and staff....I truly thank you for the heart and soul you give of yourself while playing the game you love so much. We love our Lions and wish them luck the remainder of the season and whereever their careers may take them. I hope someday coach Faulkner (either one or both) will return and teach our little boys how to play tough and with heart.

Nice post. You know so many people want to knock what Elliott has done and how good they are. Many people are just waiting for this class to graduate so they can talk about how bad we are. But people dont understand that these last four years have been so special for us and we are just proud and grateful for our little team. Like the article said, in a County were there is economical hardship, our Lions have given us something to believe in and to be proud of. Every year there are so many schools who have great teams; once they graduate they simply reload. We cant do that, and we know that. Thats what makes this group of boys even more special. They will always be remembered not just in Elliott County Basketball lore, but they will be remembered by the state for many many many years to come.

Awesome story. Its cliche but sports success can really bring an area together. This is a special bunch and Sandy Hook is the better for it.

Doe's anyone know the number to a sport's help line for parent's who's kid's senior year is almost over??????????:cry::cry:

Don't know of any help lines; but, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents/families of these players, for without them and their support, this would not be the team it is today. Thanks!!!:thumb::thumb:
