I totally agree the Holy Cross win over Holmes in 96 deserves mention as one of the biggest in recent NKY memory. :thumb:

 

Just to clarify the bolded though, Boone beating Lloyd in the finals wasn't an upset. The Rebels were 4-0 against Lloyd that season, including the 33rd district finals just a week before. Also, I think the kid you are talking about was junior guard T.J. Evans, and I'm not sure he was the MVP. Boone had a senior who's last name was Hall and he was clearly their best player.

How about 1982 Districts down at Newport. Bellevue beat NCC who was reanked number 1 in the region at the time I believe. Bellevue was led by Jimmy Maher, Doug Schulte, Tom Bosse, Doug Miller, Steve Crittenden and Jeff Schoulties. Im not sure of the score but I think it was 81 to 76 and it was a barn burner at a packed Newport Gymnasium that had just opened.

 

Belleve advanced to the finals where they lost to big 6'8 Jack Groves and the Newport Wildcats.

I was on the 96 HC team that beat Holmes and it was an awsome experience. But in the back of my mind, I would've like to see if Holmes could've won state that year.

One of the Flick's was on this team as a sophomore, but he saw very limited minutes. Kid could shoot the ball though.

 

Boone started four juniors Evans, Colemire, Mulcahy, and Brown with senior Hall. They were pretty much an iron five type of lineup that subbed very little.

Thanks, didn't know Boone owned Lloyd like that. I just remember that the team Holmes was most worried about all season was Lloyd because of Sheffield and Jefferson. Also didn't know about Hall either... Memories a little fuzzy over the years, I guess. Truthfully, anyone coming out of the 9th that season other than Holmes would have seemed like they came out of nowhere.

 

JoeJoe, Scott was the 2nd best team that year but Holmes blew them out during the regular season. I'm not even sure if they made the regional, but Jett, Geraci, Mullins, Dees (spelling), and another 6'7" guy I think his name was Miller were pretty good that year. I agree though that Holmes was the clear favorite.

Dang, thats right man... Can't believe I forgot about them. We used to party with all them dudes from time to time. Jesse Jett lit up that all-star game at Thomas More that year. I remember Geraci could shoot the lights out.

 

Funny that my senior year in high school seems like it was yesterday, but yet I've forgot mad details. Must have been all the beer drinkin'.

 

I think the 6'7 dude was Brian Huff. He would have been 19 that year, but may have been held back. I played with him back in the woodland taylor mill league days. Dude would get mad rebounds and I would just cherry pick down the other end for a layup. Gotta love the 2-3 zone.

Something's wrong here. Highlands beat Holmes in a classic 9th region final at Holmes in 79. It was Beal's jr year, so you did get that right.....

My memory is very foggy about this, but didn't Dayton very unexpectedly beat Holmes in about 1980 when the Green Devils were about the last team anyone would expect would take down the mighty Bulldogs??? Maybe someone can help me out here on this one. The memory is vague, but it seems like something like that happened. :idunno:

 

The more I think about it the more it really seems like this happened. I can't find any reference online to it anywhere so I'll have to make a trip to the library to see if I can locate an archive newspaper article in the Post or something. I do know that it was on a Friday night because I was at the Boys Club the next morning keeping score for the pee wee games and everybody was talking about it and shocked. I hope I find something on it because it's only fair that Dayton gets their due on something so fantastic that everyone has forgotten. Maybe some Dayton fan out there can remember something and share what they know. It was just a regular season game but still impressive over a hot team such as the Bulldogs with Beal and Company that nobody in the 9th could top. :idunno:
