20/20Hindsight Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 So, I've always wanted to learn how to play guitar. I finally took the plunge and bought a cheap one, complete with instructional dvd's and accessories. I've had it about three days and am slowly getting better at the chromatic scales. I'm having some trouble with the beginner chords, but am seeing a little progress. I figure a couple more days, and I should have the first four chords down. I can't wait to get to a point where I can actually play a song. However, until my transition between chords gets a little smoother, playing a song seems a tad bit unrealistic. Anyone have some advice for a beginning guitar player?

Here is a great site that can really help you out. Good luck. :thumb:
Habib Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 Practice everyday. You'll develop muscle memory for the chords which will make transitioning smoother. Don't blow off scales either. It will be tempting once you get a few chords down and can play songs, but knowing those will help you in the long run.

halfback20 Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 I'm not good by any means and everything I've learned has been self taught...but the only advice I can give you is... Practice! Practice!!

owsleyking Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Play.Play.And play some more. There is no magic to it. Just practice and get with people who are better than you. Youtube has some great videos for beginners. Check them out. Also, get yourself a rubber ball and keep it around.Pick it up frequently with the hand you use to chord (not pick) with and squeeze it. It builds up finger and hand strength that will help when you get to those bar chords. Oh.and above all else.HAVE FUN!!!!:clap:
mcpapa Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Savor the moment when that barre/bar chord rings out clearly for the first time...
Run To State Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Very nice site. Just learned the D chord. Thanks for the link!!No problem, I've found it to be the best site available for free lessons and it has a plethora of information.
Aiden Seamus Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Take lessons from a good guitar teacher, not a burnt out hippie. If you can, try to get on with Chris Simpson at the Lexington Music Academy. Best guitar instructor in the area.
HammerTime Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 He's probably already better than me. He? :sssh::clap:
Run To State Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Well how am I supposed to know? Hindsight's 20/20... :jump:

You can also build up strength to do barre chords with it. www.gripmaster.net
