I know this is a thread for worst student sections but you can leave GRC out of the discussion. GRC's student section has been very solid at almost every game, big numbers, very loud and always supportive of their team(as well as getting on the other team). They have been one of most solid that I've seen this year.

 

 

I attended the game last Friday against Mason Co. and I did not see a very big student section. For a 6A school that has 1500-2000 (not exactly sure, somebody help on enrollment) there were not many there. But, it is not just there, it is everywhere that I have been to games.

There is no student section. All those rowdy loud fans are parents.

Henry Clay is far and away the worst student support I have seen.

I've not missed a home or away game in several years. See my avatar, that's us at Rupp last year. Our student section got killed out a few years ago by the principal. He did away with signs, and rowdy kids chanting. The last kids I saw with Elliott County face and body paint was at Richmond year before last, and they were not even Elliott kids, they were Lawrence County kids cheering for us. When I think of student sections, Russell and Morgan and some others have good ones.:taz:

 

I agree with you!! We've not had a "student section" since these boys were freshman (I used to LOVE the D fense sign). The students are scattered throughout the gym, not concentrated into one specific area like they used to be. I can't understand why the principal did that. So the parents had to step up and fill that role!!!:ylsuper:

Go to an 11th Region game not at Scott County or Lexington Catholic...

 

Maybe I shouldn't paint with such a broad brush, but I've been to games at Lafayette, Tates Creek, Henry Clay - pretty much the same.

 

Every city school game I have been to, I could count the fans on one hand that were cheering. I will give credit to tates creek thought because out of all the city schools they do turn out the best! :popcorn:

Sounds like its just apathy all the way around. Sad that more kids don't have school spirit anymore. Times have certainly changed.

 

I believe it's a generational thing. There's not much these days for kids to get excited or enthusiastic about because they get so much.

 

These teams/individuals "parental units" have stepped up to fullfill the gaps and continue their ongoing school spirit just as they did when they were in high school.

It's important to let the kids have fun with this stuff. The students at my school are just starting to get the idea of what a student section is supposed to be. I think its funny when they yell "Push It," over a bad call. And yes they are actually yelling 'Push It.' Let the edgier stuff go as long as there is no profanity or extreme innuendo.

The CocCath student section of old was great but they have proven to be front runners and have disappeared this year. Holy Cross for a small school has a wonderful cheering section. I agree the Holmes section has disappeared as well compared to the late 70's early 80's sections.

When I was in school in the late 1980's, the student sections would be packed and loud, especially for all the local rivalry games. Russell's student section even had a nickname so it sort of took on a life of its own. Coupon21, I remember the Greenup students dressing up as farmers. That made for fun environments. It seemed like every school in the region had a unique student section back then. It is a shame that tradition hasn't been carried on. Most students these days just must not really care that much one way or another if their team wins or loses.

When I was a junior and senior I was the president of our school's pep club. My senior season, we had the best team in our school's history. We won 26 games-but lost in the first round of districts-during my senior year, our pep section for boys basketball was amazing. We had at least 50 strong each night-which is saying something considering we were a smaller school-we were organized, with signs, cheers and everyone either had their body painted or at the least, their face.

 

That was about 8 years ago and now our pep section is quite pathetic, we have a good turnout crowd wise but our student pep section harldy ever eclipses 15 people even against our most hated rival!

This year the dance teams, color guard, and pep band have really increased ticket sales. The student section actually has been pretty full, not creative or loud but full. Despite the record Russell has been fun to watch and the JV team is 11 & 4. Having said that I hope Elliott Co brings their cheerleaders so they can play the second half. LOL :isurrender:

I'm sorry to tell you that the cheerleaders won't be there (as a group anyway). In the current economic situation the cheerleaders do not participate in away games. A large portion of them will be attending though so maybe they can dress out anyway!!:ylsuper:

The school is right around the 1700 mark and for the amount of students at the games you have to admit they are still pretty loud and get at the other team frequently especially when that team is shooting at the basket on the end where the students stand I really feel that the number of students has dropped but the passion is still there and that is why they are a solid student section!
