February 7, 200917 yr I totally disagree. See Indy, New England, . NE was winning Super Bowls with receivers no one heard of.
February 7, 200917 yr I believe the decision lies upon sources of intelligence. If you have info that someone will offer enough to beat the franchise tag, by all means tag him. I doubt seriously this is the case however, and otherwise you cant afford the luxury.
February 7, 200917 yr NE was winning Super Bowls with receivers no one heard of. Yeh and Tom Brady might be the best QB ever. I'm pretty sure most folks know Troy Brown, Deion Branch (Super Bowl MVP) etc. While they aren't Moss/Welker they aren't slouches either. They are somewhat of an exception becasue Brady is so good IMO. Steelers who won the Super Bowl in the end..Holmes. Giants what happened when they lost Plax? Colts Wayne/Harrison were studs. Rams Holt/Bruce were studs. The game has evolved. The people that think you can just run the ball and win need to get with the times. I'm all for running the ball but it's much easier to do when the box isn't loaded. Pitt is as smashmouth as there has ever been. Go back and look at the Super Bowl stat line. The amount of yds rushing compared to the amount of yds passing won't even be close. If the Steelers realize it then everybody should. Look at top rushing teams like Carolina... Steve Smith. Atl... stud WR. Tenn/Balt are about the only exceptions and their defenses are great!

Burress missed the following games: Seattle (Giants W 44-6) @ Arizona (Giants W 37-29) @ Washington (Giants W 23-7) Philadelphia (Eagles W 20-14) @ Dallas (Dallas W 20-8) Carolina (Giants W 34-28) @ Minnesota (Vikings W 20-19) *Giants starters sat out 2nd half Philadelphia (Eagles W 23-11) So they were 4-4 without Burress. They could have used him, but they could have won without him too. They just choked in the playoffs, no ifs ands or buts about it.

February 7, 200917 yr So what was their record with him?......... It's not hard to figure out. They finished 12-5 overall including the playoff loss.

I don't think they choked, they just wasn't playing good ball at the end of the season. I think they had too many distractions... :taz:

Lets assume Henry doesn't lose his mind. Add in Caldwell who shows promise. There's 3. Add in pass-catching TE. There's 4. Now use the money you save by not spending it on TJ and fortify the line that was bad last year. Fortify the DL that got no pressure last year. The Colts that you use as your reference never got over the hump until they addressed their D. Once they did they then won. Right?

And if Carson can keep him from getting blown up going after errant passes, he can help. If TJ leaves and Simpson is not in the conversation, thats a problem.
February 7, 200917 yr Why have the Bengals at the very least contacted TJ? Seriously, couldn't they at least tell him they want him? Or at the very least call him to thank him for his service here and wish him well.

The Colts that you use as your reference never got over the hump until they addressed their D. Once they did they then won. Right? I get where you are coming from because the Bengals have a lot of talent at WR. CJ used to be a top 10 WR. Henry when he has his head on is one of the best #3's in the league but I persoanlly wouldn't want to hang my franchise on the shoulders of CJ + Chris Henry. CJ is too much about himself and C.Henry is what he is. CJ has also been banged up a lot as of late. To me the Bengals had a window where they had a chance to be one of the best in the league. Palmer isn't getting any younger. I think they are better off blowing up some of the problems and rebuilding while their defense is finally getting better. They blew it not building from the inside out a long time ago. It's kind of too the point that you have to decide who is going to make your team go and who is bringing it down. From what I understand TJ and Carson are close. CJ has been a major distraction. They could have had a #1 for him + last year so I would shop this year just to test the market. If I could move him and get a guy like Crabtree I would. I wouldn't be getting rid of a guy that is in the tops of the leagues in receptions though. I understand what you are saying but if you look at most teams they have a dominant WR or 2. Yeh the Colts got better but they didn't add much to their defense. Cato June  If you remember the defense didn't play that great that years. They got on a streak when it counted and were really good down the stretch. Still though the Colts have always lived by putting up points with their offense then making you play catch up. That's why when they don't get up on people the little defense gets exposed. They are built on speed to defend the pass. Really it's all simple math. Double a WR and that's one less guy in the box. Don't have to double a WR and there is one more guy in the box. That's what happened to the Giants when Plax went out. They didn't have that threat at WR that had to be doubled at times.
February 7, 200917 yr Why throw away money on him if you're the Bengals? Larry Fitzgerald is the exception, but WRs don't win football games. Games for the most part are won or lost by the offensive and defensive lines. This team needs to build both those areas up, and they can use the money they'll save from letting TJ walk to do that. If they resign or franchise him, it's just another example of this team doing the thing that is exactly the opposite of what they need to do put a winner on the field. I agree and disagree. First, the disagreement. Some WR's can have a huge impact on games and winning and losing. Guys like Fitzgerald, Moss, TO, etc...a guy like that is worth the investment and are some of the most coveted and impactful players in the game. Now, the agreement...TJ is not one of those guys. He's a great possession guy, but not a game changer. Not a guy that really scares teams and requires inordinate game planning and coverage, IMO. Not worth the money he'll demand...especially for Cincinnati in its current state.
February 8, 200917 yr Steelers who won the Super Bowl in the end..Holmes. James Harrison won the Super Bowl for the Steelers.
