Conner 71 Highlands 56

I agree. Conner is really looking like a solid team. The ninth is officially wide open!

What makes you think by this game that the 9th is wide open? Holmes is the no doubt clear cut favorite and everyone else is playing for second.

Both teams are very young, so some inconsistency isn't a shock...

When does this Birds team lose the "young team" label. They play a rotation of 8/9 Juniors. Two of these boys have gotten varsity minutes since Freshman year.

Actually that's not correct. Kowolonek was the only soph who saw major minutes last year. Grote saw spot time here and there but wasn't a huge factor last year.

The majority of the junior class is in their first full year of varsity ball.

I never said they were a huge factor. The statement was that 2 players have seen varsity minutes since their freshman year. That is correct. Both Grote and Kowolenek played some varsity as freshmen.

So in your opinion does this team deserve the label of a young team. It's February and they have played about 20 games. When do we get to call them an experienced team--next November.

Holmes is the clearcut favorite (:deadhorse:) but there are always potential blips on the radar screen. Last year Newport Central Catholic beat them and this year Scott took them into overtime. Highlands could give Holmes a good game or lose by 20. That remains to be seen.

Watson logged a fair amount of time last year

Wow, really good win for Conner. :thumb:

I'm not sure "young" is the right word that I'd use for this year's version of the Bluebirds, but "inexperienced" would definetly be a good word to describe them, which leads to their inconsistency at times.

Forgot about Watson...thanks for reminding me.

Hard to say this team is young and inexperienced. I'll go with lacking identity and leadership. No fault to the players, just happens with no seniors. They will be much better next season.

I dont think you can label them young or inexperienced. This group of Juniors has been competing at a high level since 8th grade when they won the 8th grade middle school championship. I would say a 15-5 record is pretty darn good no matter how you slice it. You cant win em all and you gotta give cedit to the Cougars and Coach Hicks.

You know they shouldn't be considered too inexperienced if they are ranked No. 2 in the coaches poll.

I think that comment was stated because only 2-3 players saw varsity minutes at all last year as sophs. They have played 20 games so far this season and they shouldnt be considered inexperienced at this point. They have beaten State ranked teams and have shown they can win. The inexperience excuse is brought out when they lose to teams that they shouldnt. I dont buy it.

Wide open for what? Runner-up!
