Most fans see what they want to see. It's funny how I've heard fans say that refs in a certain game are calling too many fouls, and the same fans have also said in another game The refs weren't calling enough fouls.

 

I believe that 3 refs are definitely better than two. I've played and coached in both situations and trust me 99.9% of the time 3 refs are better.

 

Just remember there are good refs and bad refs. Just like there are good coaches and bad coaches, good players and bad players.

 

Being a referree is NOT an easy job. Most refs are trying to do the best they can and we need to understand that and accept it.

Asan official myself I prefer 3 teams will get a better called game. IMO it doesn't matter if you have 10 out there not going to get everything and definitely not going to please fans. Just the way of life I go out and call every game the same. I treat all teams the same whether they are the best 2 teams in the region or the worst 2 teams. I give each school equal respect.

I have friends that officiate here in the state of KY. They tell me we are years behind in Officiating in KY because of the fact the KHSAA has not mandated 3 man crews throughout the regular season. Every state around us has been using 3 man crews for a while. If this is the case, it is very sadening as we are suppose to be one of the so called Basketball States and should be in the forefront of everything Basketball. We have the GREATEST SHOW IN HOOPS, The KHSAA National City state tournament. It uses 3 man crews and has for several years. Has it always had the best officiated games, I would be the first to say NO. WHY? Because our officials around the state do not or have not had the opportunity to officiate a whole season using 3 man crews. If this were the case, I am sure the officials would have more looks and plays in the 3 man system, and just like a basketball team, would get better as the season goes on. :irked:

 

They tell me alot of the problems that most fans complain about, is that they do not understand the 3 man system. Just because an Official is closer to a play does not mean it is his/her area. Take a play where there is an official on the baseline and and another near mid court. The ball is at the 28 foot mark being closely guarded. The offensive player makes a move and drives to the basket and gets fouled by the definsive player. The foul is called. most fans think it should be called by the official on the baseline. Incorrect. The out official near mid court has the call as this is the Primary area for that official. now if that official passes on the call or does not get a good look then the baseline official will make it as it becomes his secondary call.

 

Yes These guys and gals are not perfect and no one ever will be, but these people go out every night and do their best. No not every night is perfect on the court but there is not many of them out there thoes not give 100% every night.

 

If more fans would learn the rules and understand more of the officiating principals, these same people on here that are complaining, would then understand the game more.:thumb:

I think the three man crew would call more walks though. It seems to me there are alot missed. Two officials is fine though.

What frustrates me the most is when a ref farthest from the action and partally blocked view makes the call with the other two who are closer and unobstructed call nothing.

 

Then during the game you mention a call to a ref and he says thats the other ref's call.:confused:

 

You'd be surprised at what a ref can see who is farther away than the ref who is closer. For example, a ref on the baseline is going to have trouble seeing if a post player who is being fronted pushes off when the pass comes in. That play/push is much easier to see for the ref who is out top and even on the other side of the floor. Same thing on a play where there is a foul from behind on a shooter who is by the basket.

I don't think it would hurt if the officials knew all the rules. I don't defend the officials, I think if they want to ref, they should know the rules and have the ability to make the judgement calls, that's what they get paid for.

Actually, it can be both by rule. You hope it doesn't happen and you discuss this before the game. Sometimes, though, in the heat of the battle officials get excited and forget what they discussed prior to the game.

For regular season games, it is the school's choice on whether they want to pay for a 2-man crew compared to a 3-man crew.

Why?

While it could end up being a "jump ball" its not automatically. Its actually a Point of Interruption scenario. So, in this case, had the shooter made the shot and one official called a PC foul and the other called a block the basket would count and the other team would get the ball OOB regardless of the arrow.
