February 3, 200917 yr I'm against abortion but I'm not comfortable with making it a crime because I don't see how you can rationalize an appropriate sentence. Just out of curiosity....on what grounds are you against abortion? What makes you against it?
February 3, 200917 yr FWIW I am against abortion in all cases (I do not consider cases in which the mother's life is endangered to be abortion, as long as all attempts are made to save the child). I am also against the death penalty in all countries that have the resources to otherwise protect society from the criminal.

I'm not smart enough to decipher the conflicting opinions on whether the life begins at conception or not so its not based on any scientific research. I guess one could say its partly my Catholic faith but then again the Church is against the DP and I'm not completely against it as I've stated. It simply doesn't seem right to me. Call it a gut feel.

February 3, 200917 yr Define "resources" in the U.S. The United States penal system has the capability, facilities, and money to lock someone up 24/7 rather than execute them. Only in the event that this has been tried and the prisoner continues to kill should they be put to death. However, a poorer country may not have these resources, and, if that is the case, the death penalty is an unfortunate last resort that is the only way to protect society.

Lock 'em 24/7. No human contact whatsoever. Food through a slit in the door. I have no problem with all that. If they still can kill then they die. Other than the most extreme of cases, it is God's decision when life ends and begins.

February 7, 200917 yr How can one be opposed to abortion and supportive of the death penalty? Innocent vs. guilty. Having said that, I don't see the value of the death penalty when there is so much time between the crime committed and the execution (no pun intended) of the punishment. I am not opposed to the death penalty, but I am opposed to it when a decade elapses between crime & punishment. It is not a deterrent in that scenario. I would not have a problem if the death penalty, as we know it in America, was outlawed. And I can't believe that some people do not view life in the womb as life. Surgeries are performed regularly on children in the womb. In one instance, a doctor at Vanderbilt was performing surgery, and the child's hand grasped the doctor's finger in the process. When a woman has an abortion, it's not her heart that stops beating. When the chemicals are injected to end life in the womb, it's not the mother's body that shirks and resists the burning. I did not vote for Obama, because his record is one of doing whatever necessary to keep this barbaric procedure legal. My vote has NEVER and WILL NEVER be based on race. If former Congressman J.C. Watts of Oklahoma ran for President, I'd vote for him. As I would vote for Mr. Steele of Maryland (I think it's Maryland). I have never voted pro-abortion and never will. Well Randy you do know that some people have actually been put to death and were innocent of the crime. So if you execute someone who is totally innocent of a crime then that is an abortion in a sense isn't it. I mean a totally innocent life has been taken for no reason. You can't say that hasn't happened so what do you call it. Now for you never voting because of someone's race you have mentioned two African-Americans here. Are you mentioning them because they are African-American or because they are African-American republicans? You know how a person can say I am not a racists and then tells how many friends of a different race they have.

February 7, 200917 yr Texan who died in prison exonerated Granted, this young man was not sentenced to death, nor executed. But, the fact that his sentence ultimately ended in his death while wrongly convicted is enough incentive for me to continue to believe that the death penalty is wrong.

Most official courts stop investigation when the trial ends (particularly in a guilty verdict). There has been plenty of evidence given for the innocence of Sacco and Venzetti to name one high profile case. Of course the question arises what is "the modern era."
