Central looked a lot smaller than in recent years. Mason County had them out-sized (well, out-heighted, anyway) at every starting position. One of the reasons for the Royals' high shooting percentage in the game was exploiting their height advantage down low.

Nice game for the Royals and way to come back and take care of business. Glad to hear Pawsat was back and had a nice game for the Royals, I really think that him and Setty, and of course Middleton will be the key to how far the Royals can go. Glad to hear Wells was there, Id like to see him as he was my coach up until my senior year and havent seen him since the year before the Royals won state tourny last year. As far as the crowds IMO I think that every year since my senior year that they have gotten smaller and smaller, even last year at state tounry the crowd want huge like it was for Mason the past couple times they'd played in the championship game. I feel as though the talent level has fallen off some over the years and ticket prices mixed in could be a key factor that turns some fans away.

 

Disagree, the talent level hasn't fell off that much if any at all. Lofton was a draw when he played for many different reasons. The economy is a difference from 2003 to present day. In fact there is a boat load of talent from the freshmen class up to the senior class presently. Mason Countys last appearance in a championship game at rupp before 2003 was 1981, so there is another factor for the large crowd on that March night. Someone help me out here, does the school system still offer incentives to students to get in free at games like for grades, etc? Some of these games are affected by Title IX, which girls games and boys games are on prime time nights. Such is the case coming up on February 6th when Mason visits Clark. The Mason girls will be on the road to Brossart the same night. Prime time nights are killing crowds, maybe not the major reason at Mason County, but across the board it has to hurt schools across the state. Just my opinion, I know when I was in high school years ago, there were different incentives for the student body to get in, ticket prices weren't sometimes five dollars and the crowds with much less talent level on the floor were greater.

I think people are hunkering down because of the weather as well. At Montgomery County last night I was very surprised at the low attendance. Of course that is a very large gym.

My understanding is that Mason County still has the blue cards and the white cards that give students discounts for making grades.

 

IMO, four bucks is still a bargain to watch a couple of basketball games - provided you get there early enough to watch the JV game.

 

Whatever the reason(s), last night's crowd was a downer. Feldhaus returns to town with a nice team, Mason County back at full strength; several compelling reasons to be there. Very few folks in the student cheering section, also. I commend those that do show up to support the Royals, but that group's numbers has fallen off considerably since even last year.

 

The more I think about it, I wonder if Mason County hasn't been a bit spoiled with the Lofton-Miller era. I'm guessing that Chris and Darius generated some ticket sales all by themselves. Maybe lots more folks want to see a HS phenom. I enjoyed watching those two as much as the next guy, but this year's brand of Royals is pretty fun to watch - especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Yes they do, but they do not apply to Showcase or tournament games such as the MCIT. The student section this year is pitiful as well. They don't even deserve to be called Fieldhouse Krayzies.
