Other People's Jobs

We're all guilty of it. We envy other people for their jobs, or we look at someone and say "I wish I had that job. They have it so easy. It's so fun."

 

The last few days, I've been thinking the opposite, based on jobs in the hotel where I work.

 

In this weather, our Valets, Bellmen, Doormen and Bell Captain are still expected to stand outside to be able to assist our guest in opening doors, parking cars, assisting with luggage. I absolutely wouldn't want their job for anything in the world. This is the worst time of the year, money-wise, for them, and the conditions are deplorable. But somehow, we have a core of employees who have been here for years. Our Bell Captain has probably been here for at least 15 years. Think how many winters he's stood for 8-12 hours a day in the brutal cold, in the snow, the rain, the heat.

 

We have 2 Brazilian boys here on their summer break working as bellmen. Think what a shock this is to their systems. I hope they still have a good impression of the US when they leave in a couple of months. :lol:

 

The boys from Hungary seem to handle it the best.

I am very guilty of it. I work at a bank so I see who is bringing in all the money. Sometimes I find myself thinking man I really want that job. Or people that come in at like 2 in the afternoon and tell me they are off work already. :irked:

Depending on who it is, I have before. Some people you have a good relationship with you can ask anything really.

With the job I have, there are struggle no doubt...but I log a lot of time in various accounts, with a vast array of folk. Competition is an absolute nightmare...but I have a ton of freedom to be myself and build my business according to my style and technique...at this time, I couldn't imagine doing anything different.

Alas, a considerable lack of talent brings the dream crashing back to reality.

The best job would be having enough money to not have one, and then being able to do what you loved just for fun!

I'm guilty of envying other people's jobs. I do it all the time. I don't necessarily envy them for the money, but moreso the opportunities and enjoyment they get from their jobs.

I'm guilty of it. I'd love that job in Australia and think that I'm more than qualified to work overseas someplace.
