January 15, 200917 yr Author Man, the paranoia on here ... are the black helicopters far behind?Only one that has nothing to lose would think that way, I take it your not a gun owner nor do you care about those that are.
January 15, 200917 yr Only one that has nothing to lose would think that way, I take it your not a gun owner nor do you care about those that are.Actually, I am ... and I'm the son of an NRA member. I just get tired of the Chicken Little "The Sky is Falling" mentality ...
January 15, 200917 yr Author I'm quoting your post as an example of what I feel is a real paranoia prevelant among a somewhat significant sector of our society. To me, one of the most glaring indications is the use of the pronoun "they". It's as if there's an "us against them" mentality. As to the comment about thought control/political correctness, do you really feel that people who are for supportive of increased gun control measures are sheep being led to slaughter? If we are, then I sincerely hope I don't have to count on the NRA members of this country to save me. There is no collective concern for the collective right to bear arms in case the government runs roughshod over our collective rights. In post after post after post over the last year or so, there's a concern for the "me" in the post. There's no concern about protecting one's neighbor, only one's own property. There are far many more fragile and subjective rights that are controlled. And the unarmed citizens of the country have the right to feel that they can leave their child in the care of an adult gun owner, and that that child will be alive and unharmed when they come to pick him/her up. There is the right of the unarmed citizenry to drive down the road and know that should an irate driver be upset at their driving, he doesn't pull out a gun and shoot them at the next stop sign. There is a duty to protect citizens from irresponsible citizens. I don't care if people have guns. I don't think guns are bad. I grew up around guns, I can shoot a gun, and I'm good at it. I don't own a gun by my own choice. I have no need for one. If a person wants to own a gun, more power to them. But, where am I wrong in believing that increased measures to ensure that mentally unstable people & people who may forge documentation, should be restricted? Submitting finger prints and photo ID's would help eliminate forged documentation. A national database is wise, especially in this day and age, where domestic hate group participation is growing. I favor increased penalties for careless ownership of guns. We live in a paranoid age. Rockmom, you act as if there are no regulations on guns at all. Guns are regulated more than most things are, we don’t need nor do we want more regulation. Gun owners are tired of their rights being infringed on constantly and have to give up more and more, mostly because of inner-city punks and thugs. This bill will do ZERO to curb their activity, so why in the world would you think this useful? It only targets law abiding citizens, not criminals, it will have ZERO effect. You throw the word paranoid out there, the only paranoid people I see are the ones that want more gun control because they want Big Brother Government to take care of us.
January 15, 200917 yr Another interesting fact I found on the Bureau of Justice and Statistics website: LINK Note that the Swiss rank 56th of the 62 countries ranked in murder rate, despite having one of the highest gun ownership rates in the world. Gun ownership does not increase the murder rate in a country and attempts to correlate the two statistics are misguided.
January 15, 200917 yr Author Actually, I am ... and I'm the son of an NRA member. I just get tired of the Chicken Little "The Sky is Falling" mentality ... No one on here has that mentality, they're just realistic. If you can't see that, yo're leaning to far left....
January 15, 200917 yr No one on here has that mentality, they're just realistic. If you can't see that, yo're leaning to far left....I see that mentality here all the time ... it was especially prevalent during the 2008 campaign. Maybe those with that mentality are just leaning too far to the right ...
January 15, 200917 yr Author I see that mentality here all the time ... it was especially prevalent during the 2008 campaign. Maybe those with that mentality are just leaning too far to the right ... It was the guy you voted for that was quoted as saying "I see no reason for anyone to own a semi-automatic weapon". Is that the "mentality" you like?
January 15, 200917 yr It was the guy you voted for that was quoted as saying "I see no reason for anyone to own a semi-automatic weapon". Is that the "mentality" you like? You assume that you know who I voted for ... He's entitled to his opinion, and I don't entirely disagree with it.
January 15, 200917 yr I am continually amazed at the leap from increased measures regulating gun ownership to outright confiscation. Do you feel as violated when you now see the 0 Trans Fat label on all your favorite snack foods? Granted, there's no constitutional right to eat bad things. What about when the FCC requires the bleeping out of offensive language? We do have the right to free speech. The original of free speech was to protect people fro being arrested if one spoke out against their government in protest. It was not put in the Constitution to defend vulgarties or porn.

I favor increased penalties for careless ownership of guns. We live in a paranoid age. I look at history and see what has happeded in other countries and see the need to protect my rights. Guns only do what it owner wants it to do. We need to change the thinking of part of our culture. One has better chance of being shot and killed in one our cities than a soldier in Iraq, because we have debased our culture. Removing God from the forefront and replacing with porn and bad mouthed humor, living for one self and not for some higher purpose.
January 15, 200917 yr The original of free speech was to protect people fro being arrested if one spoke out against their government in protest. It was not put in the Constitution to defend vulgarties or porn. How convenient to bring up the original intent of one constitutional ammendment, but disregard the original intent of the one we're discussing. The original intent of the 2nd ammendment wasn't to make sure you didn't have to be fingerprinted to own a gun either. It's OK to shout hate speech at a rally, even wear a bedsheet or mask while doing it; that's protected under the constitution. And you'd defend that right with your gun, concealed from any onlookers by your license to hide your weapon from everyone. But, gosh forbid that we tell people to be civil, that shouting hateful things is a crime, and that if you want to own a gun you have to tell us about it.

Removing God from the forefront and replacing with porn and bad mouthed humor, living for one self and not for some higher purpose. How in the world does owing a gun and not having to give a fingerprint solve the issue? I get so tired of the "look at what society has become" excuse. Fix the problem, don't add to it. Moral values can be changed. But it takes more than the lamenting of the lack thereof. God hasn't been removed from the forefront. But, many people choose to not put God in the forefront. As much as I wholeheartedly believe in the value of the Catholic Education for my kids, even if they'd gone to public school, God would have been in the forefront. Don't blame the government for removing God.
January 15, 200917 yr Read the thread about the Nazi named children being removed from their home. An article on-line this moring said that the local agency had no bad reports on the family. So were they remove for political correctness? Next they come for your guns. Then they arrest you for reading the wrong book or watching the wrong TV show. They will be able to this because society has lost its abilitity to stop an abusive government.
January 15, 200917 yr You're darn right. If I'm making a decision on anything, I'm making one that benefits me and my family before I even consider others. Why would anyone in their right mind make a decision that they know is going to be unbeneficial to them? I can't say I blame your thinking UK but I'm certainly glad that Davy Crockett and the men at the Alamo didn't have that attitude. It benefited them nothing to stay in that church but I wouldn't say they weren't in their right mind.
