SouthernSportsFan
With Meyer's second national championship in three seasons, where would Meyer rank among active coaches in the past ten or so years? You have to put him right there at the top with Pete Carroll, I believe. Perhaps number one. But who else is there? Name your top five/ten. mcpapa
Carroll and Meyer have to be the best of the "new breed". Paterno, Bowden also come to mind as far as the body of work.
SouthernSportsFan
As crazy as it may sound, we may have to include Stoops in this conversation too. In ten seasons at Oklahoma, he has played in the BCS Title game FOUR times. Four times in ten seasons is unbelievable. However, he has only walked away with one championship. Big Slick
I would think Nick Saban would be in there somewhere if you are talking about the current state of the game.
NobizLikeShowbiz
Meyer, Carrol and Myles are my top 3, in no particular order. I am a big fan of Les Myles.

Hearsay
This thread is a lot different than the top 5 teams thread, because there are a lot of things that make a coach great. Where the bar is set with me has a lot more to do with getting the most out of what hand your dealt then necessarily championships. Pete Carroll resurrected a program. USC had been in a state like Michigan is currently in. For that, plus what he has done to elevate recruiting, his turning football practice into a science, and his sheer love and objectiveness about the game, he is great. However, there are other guys that just squeeze every ounce of juice out of lesser players. Pat Hill at Fresno St. comes to mind. I don't know how you get any better than Houston Nutt. There is a lot of room for debate in this one.

kyfanintn
Once again, how is Frank Beamer not mentioned? I would slot him at #5 if his resume included a National Championship. I know a lot of things have to come into play to walk away as #1, but that is a must to make my list. Just my opinion.

And may I remind you, Beamer has third most wins for active coaches.
