That is strange. All I can think of was there was a couple jr. high boys games away tonight and several parents/players were there. This is the marquee matchup of the year so I am rather surprised at an overall bad crowd.

HHS must have a heckuva lot of kids playing jr high basketball then. CCH's crowd wasn't a whole lot better. Not sure why it wasn't filled. Great place to watch this type of game. Band sounded good. CCH student section was loud.

 

I do like how Willie doesn't give in to the CCH student section. He keeps his boys right on the bench during a TO despite 150 boys screaming their heads off from 3 feet away.

28 or 29 I believe. You asked. :lol: 13 on the 8th and maybe 15/16 on the 7th grade. Thats a substantial amount of kids/parents.

Not sure at what point the game broke away but CovCath came within five and then imploded. Once this happened they returned to their panic offense, and had some terrible shot selection. I saw long range NBA style threes tonight..bad. They did a nice job feeding the ball inside to Isler and Thelen, but they had a couple of shots just not fall. Still good effort as Isler had 5 pts and 6 rebounds and is still sick [obviously, as he was in and out of the restroom the whole game] and Thelen had 6 points and nice moves, the shots just didn't always fall for him. Wellbrock had 8 rebounds and had some solid blocks on defense, which is great, but really needs to become more productive on the offensive end. This team is in bad need of a PG. Maschinot isn't ready for varsity level quite yet. He'll get there, but right now it just isn't there. Solid 16 pts by Maile. The sickness bug needs to move on from CovCath quick. By Friday would be nice..

 

Grote and Kowolenek had big games for Highlands. I agree with someone who said Kowolenek had a quiet 26 points if that is possible. I felt the same about him the first time around too. He comes from out of nowhere I suppose. Good ball player. The big guy Grubbs just kind of seemed like a big body to me...and if you try to drive or get it inside on him, he'll foul very easily. Overall still a good Highlands team that I saw the first time around.

I thought the atmosphere tonight was great as well. Not every seat was filled but pretty close. Those in attendance were LOUD. The two student sections represented themselves well. Highlands' band was great. Coach Henley and Wimzie and several of the Holmes players were in attendance. The Bulldogs received much respect from both the Highlands and Cov. Cath. contingents. While we all want our respective schools to win, it is pretty clear that everyone recognizes this year's Holmes team is special.

lol, I was impressed with Highlands bench/coach. They did not let the student section affect them.

 

Also saw Holmes come in. We are in agreement, I think everyone in the 9th knows they are special this year..

I think Maschinot deserves some credit for his performance tonight. He did have a couple of not-so-good passes, but he held his own. He moved the ball well and made some good feeds. You are correct that he'll get there.

I don't remember too many good feeds. I'm a Maschinot fan, lol don't get me wrong. Tonight wasn't his night. He did not play well. He needs to learn that passing on the JV level is totally different at the varsity level. Those one handed push passes don't work, and when you do a pass it has to have something on it.

:thumb:I do know what you mean. Maschinot has a very good eye for the open man and can usually get it there, sometimes into tight spaces. Although he did struggle a little tonight with telegraphing his perimeter passes. He will only get better.

 

Once he grows some more and gets bigger and stronger, he will be a very good point guard for Cov Cath.:walk:

Not surprised Highlands won, but surprised by the margin. Good job Birds. Glad to see Grote have a good game.

The margin had more to do with CovCath imploding then Highlands being 16 points better. Highlands is a good ball team, but CovCath was in this and basically handed it away.

Got to the game and would disagree that HHS was not that much better than CCH. Losing to the same team by 15 and then 16 equates to "that much better" not an implosion by CCH.

As for the game, Grote played exceptionally well with the three-ball,drives to the basket and stellar D. Kowolonek does everything quietly, good-natured kid gets his points by consistently being in position,quick jumper,finishes high and gets to the line. Thought this game had Coach Schlarman doing much better at mixing kids in/out and team responded with more intensity. Pretty solid effort for the Birds.

Covcath struggled with consistency on offense. Maile obviously carried the load but required a lot of shots to get to 16. He is a good jumper but often left teammates standing while he tried to create space to get his shot off. Didn't think the inside game was very strong with Wellbrock/Isler totaling less than 10, although Thelan showed some promise for a soph. Ives played well scoring early and driving to the basket well, but when that stopped they looked lost offensively. Understanding they are not at full strength, they still have a long way to go.

Another not surprized at the winner, but thought CCH would get a little closer the 2nd time around? Congrats to Willie and the Birds! Makes CovCath's Friday game with the Beechies a lot more interesting than usual??
