That group ended up being fools gold, they lived off of some of the class above them and when it came time to shine they left off their polish. Football being the ultimate team game should enable this class to set the bar a few notches higher with a group that has no one that would be considered star status, but one that has decent talent and a hunger to be better. This class could start the upswing for the Dragons for a nice run back to being a team that was respected by most teams in our area, and maybe get to go beyound that level. Time will tell, but it is fun to speculate at there chances of doing some nice things in the next few years.

Where can I see this schedule HDE? Corbin & Knox? :scared: Lee again? I'm going to stick my neck out and say 7-3 in 09'. At least the potential is there. I believe Knox will be a contender for the title in 09'. VERY impressive football team.

I'll leave claims like that to you. But will say, the kid has a tremendous amout of heart and works very hard as do many others on the team. I just have not seen a schedule for 09' and thought there was some where to see it.

Like you and HDE, I also think they have some good returning players but the "outstanding" part was the # in this Sr class. It is unusual at Harlan to have a graduating class this large. Im also encouraged by the 8th grade team which should make for a good # of kids in the freshman class. Also, looking at the rest of the region, next years Dragons could be pretty dang tough!:thumb:

 

Freshman can't stand on the sideline for two years and then expect to be good varsity players. Harlan needs to get a freshman schedule together and play a game every week if they expect to build a program.

A JV team seems more likely. Like many Class A schools, Harlan doesn't usually have enough players for a freshman team. They didn't have enough for a JV team the last couple of years.

That is one of the biggest concerns right now, how to get more kids out to play so you can have a JV schedule, fresh start is right the Dragons will need to play as many games as they can get on the JV level to ever get to where they are hoping to go. 15 8th graders signed up for next year, some have started working out and the rest are playing basketball, but 15 in a class is huge for a class A school, the next class after this could be Harlan's biggest ever there are 24 7th graders that either played last year or are intending to play next year.

Like I have said before, its 2 really good classes coming in numbers wise. Lets just hope they stay together. Im also encouraged by this years senior class. 14, or whatever the #, is a great turnout for a senior class at a small school like Harlan. The key is consistency. That is having 10 to 15 seniors every year. As far as playing a JV schedule, it is vital to get them as much game situation playing time as possible. That being said, you still need enough people left to practice when you have a JV game. If not, all you can get done on JV game days is film work and conditioning, both of which are important. The problem with this is that if you have people doing some double duty with the varsity and JV, they miss the film work. Ah, the problems of being a small football school!!:thumb:

If coach D can get his numbers in to the low 40s he should have enough to do both, in JV ball a junior that has not played much can get some game reps or a standout freshman can play both, but as outlaw said you can't loose vital practice days for varsity games to play a JV schedule. The only way is to have the numbers to do each one well.

They may have contacted him about their opening, the AD is from Harlan Co and has been a high school ref for a number of years so he knows JB well and has a lot of respect for him and the way he runs a program.
