How bad was this trade?

Featured Replies

The winless Detroit Lions traded their unhappy 2004 first-round pick and one-time Pro Bowler for three draft picks, from the first, third and sixth round in 2009. Detroit also gave the Cowboys a seventh-rounder next year.

One of the worst trades ever?

Roy's Statistics From This Year

17 catches 194 yards 1 TD

I don't think it was a bad trade at the time. His time in Dallas isn't over. I don't know how you can judge a trade like that until about 5 years down the road. I know you are loathing in Dallas stinking it up but you're getting a little desperate.

Nowhere near as bad as Minnesota's trade for Herschel Walker with the Cowboys. That has to go down in history as the all time worst.

I am getting desperate? They traded a 1st rounder for this guy, he was expected to produce immediately.

This one has time to get worse. If Roy Williams continues to stink it up in Dallas, and Detroit gets some big time players in next years draft...

Give them time. Roy will fit in.

I think the non trade of the '99 pick of Akili Smith is close to the Walker deal.

The Roy Williams trade ended up being bad, but it certainly looked good. I believe I heard that Crayton actually outgained him after the trade.

Dallas needed help on defense at the time, I didn't like the trade at first. Too early to tell long term.

Hopefully the Lions will do something positive with those picks from Dallas, much like the Cowboys did will all of the picks from Minnesota for Herschel Walker.

The Lions have the opportunity, to get some help in these rounds. Williams is talented but not sure the trade is the problem, as much as the individualism of the Cowboys.

Too many me first attitudes, doesn't help a talented group of Players, become a team with one goal.

I think Dallas had to look at it like that might be the piece that could win them the Super Bowl at the time. I also think they looked at it like their 1st + 3rd would be around the last pick of the draft in those rounds. No way they planned on it being where it is now. There's no doubt this year was a bust. Tough confrence, injuries and tough schedule but bottom line they underachieved this year.

Roy Williams will only fit into the offense better as time goes on, not worse, so it's nowhere near as bad of a trade.

I agree with HB20, time will tell if Detroit's is in this league. What made the Walker trade so awful is that the Cowboys used the draft pick to draft Emmitt Smith. If the Lions use the Cowboys pick to bring in a future Hall of Famer (I have my doubts about the Lions organization's ability to do so) then it may end up on that level.
