It doesn't have to do with bad losses or Bob and Dale. It's all about NCC and Highlands students fighting before and after games. The game is very emotional and I for one, I'm glad they don't play each other anymore.

 

That was a problem in the late '80s-early 90's. However, even CovCath-Beechwood, which was much worse than NewCath-Highlands in terms of shananigans was restarted after only a year layoff.

Nah, I'm not in favor of it either. I'd rather we play Trinity, X, a Cinti school etc that exposes our weaknesses and makes us a better team to win state. I feel the same about playing Beechwood next year.

I can't address the number of players, but over the years some of the more successful names coming out of the program have gone through the FTJFL. I'm sure you know who they are, Smith, Kues, Diehl, Colopy to name a few. Like you I am curious?

Jared wasn't the only one that was a reciepient of all Gary had to offer. Baseball was a passion of his as well.

It sounds like NCC is really able to make the spread offense work from year to year. Sounds like great coaching to me. Do they base their offense each year with the type of players they have or do they just wing it and eventually the kids will pick it up.

I think that they learned a lesson in '02. After Smith left they were stuck at QB and scrapped the spread, so they aren't married to it. Each big name QB ran a different version. Smith worked a lot out of two backs to take advantage of Kevin Smith and Steve Everson. That team also went under center a lot and employed a true TE about 40% of the time. They used the spread to throw or run draws and quick pitches. There was no option/read.

-Diehl was a 3 year starter and had more added to his plate each year. By the end of his senior year NewCath they could use the option read, but they were on absolute fire throwing the ball and never got challenged. They ran a great screen package and were the "purest" of the spread teams.

-Harris was the vicitim of inexperience as he had been injured for most of the previous 2 seasons. They tried to continue w/ the spread, but were unsuccessful and went back to a power running attack w/ Vickars. They used the spread on obvious passing situations predominately.

Last year w/ Kues they went back to the spread but used it as a option/read offense, the same as they are using this year. They basically went out of the same balanced formation every play, and passed a lot more. This year they've added a lot more with motion and have gone back to using a little two back w/ the Kelly brothers. They are trying to use the spread not to throw the ball as much as they are to create natural running lanes for their backs. They have 4 very quick kids who can run the ball. The last 3 playoff games they've thrown the ball a combined 21 times. Kues is a magician w/ the ball. So in the short, they've used the offense to match up w/ their talent.
