Fugate will be starting for Florida, USC, Texas and Oklahoma during college. Central is overmatched in this one. :sleep: I like this thread and the lone wolf - good stuff for laughter.

Wolf, remember Superman had his weaknesses, so I think Fugate's will be in the form of PATTERSON, WILSON, COBBLE AND FRIENDS. See yea Friday! Remember anything slower than a John Deere may get broke by this defense.

But, on a serious note, can somebody tell me about Central? What kind of offense and defense do they run? Do they primarily run or are they balanced?

I have not seen them play, but looks like they run the ball more than they throw it.

OK, I am confused. On the Trinity-SK thread, Miles Simpson is going to run all over Trinity's defense and here Fugate is going to run all over Central? Which one is the better junior running back?

 

I would be suprised if either one of them has a huge night as they will face the best defenses they've seen all year, by far!

 

It is going to be fun to see how each fares in their games. I am glad both are getting the chance to prove themselves against competition that no one can dispute.

Based on the bluegrasspreps stats.

The defense in 13 ball games are giving up 86 ypg rushing. In the playoffs that drops to 60 ypg. 6 times they have allowed less than 50 yards rushing. Despite the perception that their secondary is a weakness they only give up 92 ypg passing. In the playoffs their giving up 105 ypg. They have 2 players with over 17 Sacks a piece in Tennyson and Cobble. They have 7 interception in their 4 playoff games.

 

In 3A football they have faced Devin Foster from Union County who averages 172 ypg Rushing and held him to 87 yards.

In 3A football they have faced some of the top passers and here is what they did against them

Micheal Thomas, E-town 294 ypg passing Central held him to 114 and 229 in the 2 games they played.

Luke Magness, Henry County 194 ypg passing. Central held him to 53

Jordan Robison, Union County 137 ypg passing. Central gave up 97

They shut down the top receivers they saw in 3A also. Granted Gohman was hurt the second game but here is what they did versus 2 of the best they faced

Chris Gohman E-Town 150 ypg receiving. Central held him to 66 yards and no scores

Trevor Deneen E-town 73 ypg receiving. In two games he had 17 and 46 yards and no scores.

 

To think that Fugate is going to be able to overcome that type of Swarm maybe wishful thinking

Zone and Read Option on offense, QB runs alot... FAST FAST FAST skill players, big strong line. Last year they were about 50/50 run pass... this year more around 65/35 run to pass.

 

Multiple looks on defense. Cobble at DT, Tennyson at DE, WIlson and Patterson cleaning everything up at LB, and fast DB's to pursue outside.

I agree. If people think Fugate is going to go to Louisville and roll up 300+ yards and 4 TD's like he's done a few times this season, I fear they'll be terribly disappointed with the outcome. You can't ask, or expect, one player to carry your offense against a great team like Central. The other guys on offense have to step up and produce and 1) make Central pay for keying on Fugate and 2) open up some room for Fugate.

 

Channing Fugate is a great football player and he's absolutely a D-1 prospect. At roughly 6'3" and 220 pounds, he's got the one thing that a lot of great players in Breathitt's past lacked. Size. All the hype he gets is for his ability at RB, but he's the best defensive player on the team as well. He also kicks off and returns kicks. He never leaves the field. Its possible his future at the collegiate level could be on the defensive side of the ball, IMO.

 

But, football is the ultimate team sport. The rest of the Bobcat players deserve some credit for what they've done to get this team in the state finals. They showed a lot of heart with their performance against Belfry last week. While Fugate carried the offense and scored just enough to win...the defense was the key in that game. Their ability to force Belfry to run outside made the victory possible, IMO. Last year, the Pirates ran all over us and this year they had a much tougher time. They still moved the ball and got plenty of yardage, but forcing them outside increases the turnover risk, and that's what happened last week.

Defensively- YES! Returning all their studs from last year and another year of growth and devlopment from Patterson (who is being courted by some major programs and will be far and away the top D-1 prospect in the state next season).. they have one of the finer units in the state.

 

 

Offensively- Debatable... Central has revamped their offensive style to cater to their strengths. Last Year they ran alot of single back and strong sets with the QB under center. Taylor and Wadlington were very good in the backfield and the strength of that team. They laso had Leland Banks last year who was definately more of a drop back passer than a true option QB.

 

After loosing those pieces they now have King who is an exceptional runner at QB but not nearly as good of a passer, thus the switch to the read option.

That's the answer I was expecting, but definitely not the one I wanted to hear.

 

The good news from my perspective is that Breathitt arrived a year ahead of schedule. 2009 was the season most people were looking at as our best chance to compete for another state championship. So, win or lose Friday, hopefully the underclassmen on this team will get a taste of the big stage and work extra hard this summer to make a return trip.

 

Beating an improved team that won the title last year is going to be difficult. Hopefully we've got something for them.

Breathitt needs to do the following as well as they can:

1. Eat the clock...limit posessions and don't get in a track meet (literally)

 

2. Don't beat yourself... just like last week's game, when Belfry played Central last year they crippled themselves with turnovers and didn't take advantage of Central's mistakes.. Breathitt can't do this as well.

 

3. Don't give up any fast breaks... Central's athletic ability and defensive superstars can not only make plays on defense, but they can score on defense. Breathitt has got to avoid these sudden change points as much as possible because not only can it swing a drive, it could cause a 14 point swing on the scoreboard and take the momentum.

 

4. Keep everything in front of them... Central and Breathitt are very comparable in their offensive strategy in term sof passig. Both teams look for the homerun ball. Breathitt has to froce Central to drive the ball.

 

5. Don't Underestimate Scorggins... he outcoached Haywood last year (which says alot) and made some HUGE adjustments. If Breathitt goes to the well too often they will pay for it. I was very impressed witht he way Scroggins coached last year.
