All the Fugate hype reminds me of the Quan Weaver hype from Frankfort. Weaver is as good as advertised, but it did not lead to a victory versus Beechwood. I think we may see the same thing from Fugate against Central. Central fans will walk out of the stadium saying Fugate is one heck of a player ... but those Central fans will be carrying the state championship trophy after a solid, clear cut victory.

One player doesn't win championships in football. I know two things...

 

1. Regardless of the outcome Friday, Channing Fugate is a great player. He's one of the best in the state and he's a legit D-1 prospect. If he struggles to find running room against Central, that only proves what everyone should already know...football is a team game.

 

2. If Breathitt pulls the upset Friday, Channing Fugate won't do it by himself. He'll have a lot of help. It will require a great team effort from Breathitt County to win this game.

When I was at the finals last season, I thought Dustin May would run all over the Louisville Central defense...he didn't!

 

I know Fugate is a GREAT back, but Central is a GREAT team! Last year it was the classic speed vs. power matchup, and speed won! I don't see anything being much different this year.

 

With all due respect to Dustin May, Channing Fugate is a better player. However, I don't think this Breathitt TEAM is as good as what Belfry had last year, so Fugate may not fare any better than May did last year.

good analysis EKU. Central's QB's (#12 Diaz Bolden is the other) are much more of a running threat this year. Both are very fast and can score from anywhere/anytime.

 

I noticed on the film that Breathitt almost dared Belfry to run to the outside. They were outflanked on the corner on at least one side of the defense, if not both by playing thier defensive ends INSIDE the Belfry TE's. I'm assuming that was because of Belfry's wishbone and them not running outsde. Belfry started hurting them with the outside veer in the 2nd half, they just couldn't keep from turning it over.

 

If Breathitt plays a similar defense this week, thier kickoff return team will get a heavy workout - if you know what I mean.

 

Breathitt did what they had to do to give themselves a chance to win. They couldn't stop Belfry's power running between the tackles without selling out to do so...and, if you don't stop that, you don't have a chance against the Pirates.

 

Breathitt implemented the only game plan they could have that would give them a shot at victory. They had to stop the run between the tackles and they needed some mistakes from Belfry. Forcing them outside increases the chance for mistakes and it worked.

 

I imagine they'll watch the film on Central and try to do what gives them their best shot at victory on Friday.

 

Breathitt has managed to use its speed and athleticism to make up for what they like in size and strength at the point of attack. What makes Central such a difficult matchup is that the Bobcats will likely be at a disadvantage on both counts in this game.

 

Its a tough matchup, but stranger things have happened. Hopefully, the Bobcats will play their best and leave it all on the field and give themselves their best chance to pull the upset.

This matchup mirrors that of the Fort Knox-Breathitt Co. matchup in the '96 state championship game. Breathitt was at a size disadvantadge as well. They were smaller up front and slower at the skilled positions.

It mirrors it in the sense that Fort Knox relied almost solely on one RB (Derek Homer) to carry their team...like Breathitt does this year with Channing Fugate. But, I don't see a lot of similarities other than that.

 

I think Breathitt was simply better than Fort Knox. They may have had a bigger line, but that Breathitt team was pretty strong. They could more than hold their own at the point of attack. That Fort Knox team relied on Derek Homer and Yarnell Collins...Collins was the other weapon to keep teams honest on Homer. They had zero passing attack and the QB was not a running threat. Homer had a nice first quarter, but once Breathitt adjusted they pretty much shut them down. Fort Knox had 14 points and Homer had 90-100 yards in the first quarter...they finished the game with 21 points and Homer had about 150 yards.

 

That Breathitt defense was far more dominant. They had 7 shutouts that season and they were very physical. Possibly the hardest hitting team I've ever seen wear the Bobcat uniform.

 

Offensively, that team was far more balanced as well. They had Jonathan Chapman and Jason White at RB, with Kyle Moore throwing to a solid group of WR's. They were very accomplished passing and running.

 

I also don't think Breathitt was at a significant disadvantage from a speed standpoint vs. Fort Knox either. Other than Homer, I can't recall anyone standing out.

I saw them last year, I know they don't finesse, however, I've seen Breathitt County a lot this year and feel they are pretty strong on their line (both ways), their defense is under rated. Heck Fugate alone may bench more than some of Centrals lineman.

Their's going to be a blurr, Central running by Breathitt players. They may want to dress warm so they don't get wind burned from that speed. Temp 41 on Friday Wind Chill about 0 for Breathitt.

While watching film of the Central High School football team this week, Breathitt County coach Mike Holcomb felt as if he was watching another sport.
